The Mating Game

Fiction | Novel | Adult | Published in 2025
Tess Covington, a 28-year-old contractor, arrives in a Denver emergency room with severe flu-like symptoms. The physician, Dr. Carter, reveals that Tess’s abnormal hormone levels indicate she is a late-presenting wolf shifter due to a recessive gene inherited from a great-grandmother. Dr. Carter also identifies Tess as an omega, a rare secondary gender designation that places her within a distinct biological hierarchy. She explains that while shifters typically experience mild “juvenile heats” during puberty, Tess’s adult heats will likely be more frequent and intense, characterized by a powerful need to copulate. Dr. Carter prescribes mild hormone regulators and warns Tess to avoid alphas, a dominant shifter type whose powerful pheromones could trigger a heat.
Shaken, Tess travels to her next renovation job, the Bear Essentials Wilderness Lodge, a remote, rundown establishment near Pleasant Hill, Colorado. During the drive, she calls her best friend, Ada. She conceals her diagnosis but mentions a potential HGTV show deal, which she hopes will provide a signing bonus to cover her father’s expensive medical treatments for a heart condition. At the lodge, she is met by a large, gruff man who introduces himself as Hunter Barrett, the owner, in an awkward first interaction.
The perspective shifts to Hunter, who is resentful of the renovation project and immediately annoyed by Tess. He is intentionally rude, nicknaming her Miss Fixit and questioning her professional abilities, while she calls the lodge “dingy” in turn. While talking, Hunter detects her scent and realizes she is an omega. He confronts her about her designation and her lack of suppressants, which a shocked Tess misinterprets as discrimination. Hunter retreats to his room, disturbed by his powerful attraction to her scent and haunted by a painful past relationship with another omega.
The next morning, Tess video calls Ada and reveals she is a late-presenting omega shifter. She then meets Jeannie, Hunter’s aunt and the lodge’s cook. Jeannie is warm and friendly, and explains that the lodge is struggling financially. During a tense breakfast meeting, Hunter remains uncooperative about the renovation plans but eventually defers to Jeannie.
Later, Tess finds Hunter chopping wood and apologizes for insulting the lodge. They establish a fragile truce, and Tess nicknames him Grandpa for his aversion to modern technology (he uses a flip phone and avoids social media). Because her rental car is not equipped for snow, Hunter agrees to drive her to the town pharmacy. Before that, he gives her a tour of the lodge. When Tess trips and Hunter catches her, the physical contact creates a charged moment between them.
On the drive to town, Tess and Hunter bond while discussing their families. Hunter reveals his parents died in a car accident 10 years earlier, which is the root of his resistance to changing the lodge they built. In town, Hunter lends Tess his coat. When she inhales his scent from the fabric, she feels a sudden jolt of arousal. Tess meets Cat Campbell, a local shop owner and a fan of her TikTok channel, who invites Tess to a local bar called Fred’s with her and her boyfriend, Jarred.
Back at the lodge, feeling restless and protective, Hunter goes for a run in his wolf form. Meanwhile, Tess, feeling increasingly unwell and powerfully affected by the scent on Hunter’s coat, goes into her first juvenile heat. Overwhelmed by instinct, she pounds on Hunter’s door. When he opens it, she propositions him. Hunter refuses to take advantage of her, instead holding her, giving her his scent to ease her pain, while coaching her to through the heat. As she falls asleep, she murmurs “Alpha?,” questioning his secondary designation.
The next morning, Hunter confronts Tess about her carelessness. She explains her late-presenting omega status, and he confirms that he is an alpha. Their tense conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Tess’s three brothers: Thomas, Chase, and Kyle. A surge of alpha possessiveness makes Hunter retreat to his room.
Three days later, the awkward tension persists. Tess finds Hunter just after he has shifted back from his wolf form and sees him naked. To help with the restlessness she is feeling, he offers to teach her how to shift. He apologizes for his earlier harshness, explaining his past trauma with an omega who broke his heart. They agree to be friends.
In a nearby clearing, Hunter shows Tess how to shift, and she successfully transforms for the first time. They play-chase through the woods, but the activity triggers another juvenile heat in Tess. As Hunter playfully tackles her, they both shift back to their naked human forms. Giving in to their instincts, they grind against each other. Afterward, they reaffirm their agreement to be friends who “help” one another.
A week later, Tess finds Hunter in the hot tub, and they talk intimately about their pasts. Tess reveals that her father needs an expensive pacemaker. The emotional intimacy triggers another juvenile heat, and they have oral sex.
A few days later, Tess calls her friend Nate at Travel Quarter magazine to pitch a story on the lodge. That night, Tess and her brothers go to Fred’s with Cat and Jarred. Hunter surprises them by showing up. At the bar, he and Tess grow closer, sharing stories and a slow dance. Emboldened by alcohol, Tess tells Hunter she thinks he wants to kiss her. Struggling with his feelings, Hunter abruptly pulls away and takes her home, leaving her confused.
The next day, a major snowstorm hits, trapping Tess and Hunter alone at the lodge without power. Tess slips in the shower and sprains her ankle. Hunter helps get Tess out of the shower and into her clothes. To stay warm, they make makeshift beds on a bearskin rug by the fireplace. Hunter reveals the full story of his parents’ death and his guilt over not being with them. Tess comforts him, and a kiss leads to sex as her first full heat begins. Realizing her heat will last for days, Hunter promises to stay and care for her.
Tess and Hunter spend the next two days snowed in, consumed by the heat and growing deeply attached. Just as Tess’s heat ends and the power is restored, her brothers return. Hunter’s alpha instincts flare again, and he possessively tries to keep the brothers away from Tess. Tess intervenes, forcing her to explain her shifter status to her shocked brothers.
As the situation de-escalates, Tess receives a call from a producer at HGTV, who offers Tess her own show on the condition that she flies to Knoxville that night to begin work immediately. Tess is torn between her dream career, which would pay for her father’s surgery, and her feelings for Hunter. Believing her feelings are just a result of the heat and that he would only hold her back, Hunter pushes her to accept the offer. Hurt by his apparent willingness to let her go, Tess departs for the airport.
After Tess leaves, Hunter is miserable. Jeannie confronts him about his past trauma, urging him to go after Tess. Her friend Nate arrives to cover the lodge for Travel Quarter magazine. He reveals that Tess called him that morning and confessed her feelings for Hunter are genuine. Having an epiphany, Hunter asks Tess’s brothers for help and flies to California.
Tess signs the HGTV contract after a successful meeting, but she still feels empty. She flies home and tells her father, Neil, about the show and the signing bonus. Seeing her sadness, he advises her to fight for love. As she contemplates this, Hunter appears on her doorstep. He delivers a heartfelt speech, declaring his love and promising to follow her anywhere. Tess kisses him, confesses she loves him too, and reveals she was planning to return for him. They are interrupted by Neil. Tess tells Hunter she will propose making the lodge renovation the pilot episode for her new show.
In the epilogue, months later, the grand reopening of the Bear Essentials Wilderness Lodge is underway. The pilot episode about the renovation was successful, and the lodge is thriving. Tess and Hunter live together at the lodge as mates. Surrounded by friends and family, they reflect on their journey, secure in their love.
