Background

Cultural Context: Japanese Host/Hostess Bars

Joan is inspired to found the Satisfaction Café after conversing with Tomoko, a young woman she meets in Japan. Tomoko works at a host bar. In Japan, particularly in large cities such as Tokyo or Osaka, individuals can go to bars to converse with a trained host or hostess. Traditionally, these establishments have catered to businessmen and featured a male clientele being served by female hostesses (who are often young and beautiful). The rise of hostess bars may be traced back to geisha culture in Japan, in which highly accomplished courtesans entertained their clients by dancing, singing, and playing music. In the latter half of the 20th century, establishments catered to a female clientele also appeared, featuring handsome male hosts. The two types are sometimes differentiated as “host bars” (featuring male hosts) and “hostess bars.”

Host and hostess bars are intended to provide an opportunity for entertainment, leisure, and the possibility of flirtatious banter, but are importantly not intended as a site of sex work. The businesses are regulated and regularly inspected for evidence of sex work occurring on the premise. However, sexual relationships do sometimes develop out of encounters between hosts/hostesses and their clients. Host/hostess bars are intended to operate as profitable businesses, and there can be pressure on clients to spend heavily and sometimes beyond their means. In recent years, there have been reports of host/hostess bars coming under scrutiny for unsafe or predatory working conditions, and exploitation of customers. Significantly, Joan adapts the model of a host/hostess bar into a café space, where alcohol is not served and individuals primarily gather during the daytime. She also focuses on the conversational aspect, eliminating some of the more sexually charged aspects of the Japanese model.

Historical Context: The Iraq War

In The Satisfaction Cafe, Jamie is injured while serving in Iraq. This plot event alludes to a conflict between Iraq and a coalition of countries led by the United States, which spanned from 2003 to 2011. US armed forces and their allies invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003, citing Iraq’s alleged possession and manufacture of weapons of mass destruction and its support for terrorist groups allegedly linked to the 9/11 terrorist attacks as grounds for warfare. Many leaders in Europe and the Middle East objected to the war. The initial invasion quickly led to the collapse of the Iraqi government led by President Saddam Hussein. The second stage of the war involved ongoing conflict between the American-led forces occupying the country and insurgency efforts; American forces were withdrawn in 2011. However, ongoing violence and instability continued to impact the region.

According to the novel’s timeline, Jamie would have been injured in Iraq around 2008 or 2009: He enlisted a year after the 2001 9/11 attacks and he is injured six years later, on “their second operational tour” (246). When Jamie is injured, he and his best friend Nick are “conducting overwatch for the same vice president’s arrival” (246); this context alludes to the role of American forces in attempting to stabilize and support the transition toward democracy in Iraq, prior to their withdrawal in 2011. Nick’s death and Jamie’s injury reflect the significant casualties incurred by American forces during the prolonged occupation. There were also significant casualties among Iraqi forces and civilians, and widespread critiques of how Iraqi prisoners were treated while being held in American prisons.
