Background

Scientific Context: Artificial Intelligence in Modern Education

Gordon Korman’s novel grounds its science-fiction premise in the real-world integration of artificial intelligence into modern education. In recent years, AI has become a significant tool in classrooms, with the global education technology market projected by analysts like HolonIQ to grow substantially. Schools increasingly use AI-powered platforms like Khan Academy’s Khanmigo for personalized tutoring, adaptive learning software like IXL that adjusts to student performance, and automated tools for grading and plagiarism detection. In middle schools like those in The Superteacher Project, classrooms are already integrating Khanmigo and other AI tools, including MagicSchoolAI, Quizlet, and QANDA for instruction in language arts, sciences, and mathematics.

Despite the fact that AI is already in place in many classrooms, the overall impact, efficacy, and ethics of its presence are still in question. Programs like the University of Illinois College of Education highlight some of the advantages of AI in the classroom, including personalizing learning, providing students with immediate feedback, and quickly creating and supplementing content (“AI in Schools: Pros and Cons.” University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Education, 24 Oct. 2024). However, they also acknowledge the limitations and drawbacks, noting the privacy concerns connected with personal data collection, processing, and dissemination. In addition, bias in AI algorithms and “unpredictability and inaccurate information” are causes for concern, as misinformation and discriminatory biases are presented to students as objective facts due to their technological origin (“Pros and Cons”). Even proponents of AI use in the classroom promote direct discussion with students about the ethical implications of AI use, the need for critical reading and outside research to assess bias and misinformation, and examination of privacy, security, and data collection issues.

In The Superteacher Project, Project AIDACT, the secret government program, represents a logical, if highly advanced, extension of this trend, aiming to create an “Artificially Intelligent Designated Android Classroom Teacher” (142). Mr. Aidact embodies the ultimate educational AI, capable of teaching every subject from algebra to French and accessing the entire internet to answer any trivia question, resulting in a dynamic and adaptive classroom experience. Mr. Aidact also shows adaptive capabilities that go beyond the classroom, mastering complex skills like field hockey.

However, the novel also explores the limitations of this technology, reflecting contemporary debates about how the use of AI affects interpersonal communication and the connection between students and teachers. While Mr. Aidact can calculate the physics of a perfect basketball shot, he fails to grasp humor and misinterprets social cues. In addition, many of the behaviors that his students see as evidence of empathy or understanding are reflections of highly adaptive programming. This contrast between his superhuman intellect and his lack of emotional intelligence highlights a central concern in the development of AI: the lack of genuine human understanding, empathy, and creativity, all of which contribute significantly to the educational process and student progress and success. By setting the novel in a reality closely aligned with our own but more technologically advanced, Korman foregrounds the examination of technology’s role in learning, offering middle grade readers a larger perspective and context on a timely issue that directly impacts them.
