Abby is determined not to be late for Monica’s ultrasound. She is briefly delayed by Denise, who states that Abby has failed to reply to several emails from the Cuddles marketing team. Abby is surprised at her oversight but promises to fix it as soon as she returns to work.
Abby gets to the hospital before the appointment time of two o’clock, only to find Monica and Sam emerging from the ultrasound room. Sam and Monica tell Abby that the appointment was at one o’clock. Abby’s calendar confirms her mistake. When Abby asks if she can have the photo of the baby, Monica says that the original is hers but that Abby can have a copy. The receptionist congratulates Monica and Sam, mistaking them for husband and wife. Monica does not correct the misconception, and Sam does not appear to hear. Abby notes that Monica is again wearing red lipstick and a low-cut blouse.
When Monica suggests coffee, Abby and Sam say that they must return to work. However, Sam demurs when Monica expresses fascination with his current research project.
Abby tells Shelley about her concerns regarding Monica and Sam. Shelley points out that Monica looks like Abby and that Sam is likely to be emotionally influenced by Monica’s pregnancy with his child. She also observes that Monica has access to make changes to Abby’s calendar. Shelley suggests that Abby should check Sam’s cell phone for incriminating evidence.
That evening, Sam receives a text from Monica revealing the baby’s gender. Abby reminds Sam that they agreed to wait until the birth to find out. However, since Sam now knows, she asks him to share the information. He excitedly reveals that the baby is a boy.
Abby is uncharacteristically nervous about her presentation to the Cuddles executives. Jed Cofield greets her enthusiastically but is not flirtatious. When Monica enters the conference room with sandwiches, wearing a red low-cut blouse, she gains the attention of all the men. Although she is six months pregnant, Monica successfully conceals her baby bump with carefully chosen outfits.
When Abby displays the new Cuddles website, Jed points out that she has not made the changes he requested. Abby realizes that he is right, and the image on the screen includes a baby that Jed vetoed as “ugly.” Monica has to assist Abby in finding the amended version. When Jed complains that the slogan is “clunky,” Abby struggles to think of the alternatives she came up with. Monica suggests, “Cuddles Baby Food—because your baby deserves the best” (138). Although Monica clarifies that the slogan is Abby’s, Jed enthusiastically responds as if Monica came up with the idea. Denise describes Monica as one of the company’s “rising stars.”
After the meeting, Denise reprimands Abby for her mistake. Monica is invited to join a discussion with Jed while Denise instructs Abby to clean up the coffee cups in the conference room.
Abby is suffering from insomnia. Sam wakes up as she paces the bedroom and suggests that she needs sleeping pills. Abby proposes that sex might help her relax. However, Sam states that he has an early lecture the next day. It is the first time he has ever declined sex with Abby. When Sam falls asleep, Abby stares at his cell phone, resisting the temptation to check it.
Abby notes that Monica’s hospital appointments always seem to be scheduled when Sam is free but that her own work commitments prevent her from attending. However, when Monica is seven months pregnant, Abby and Sam drive to a pregnancy check together. They discuss potential names for the baby, but whenever Sam makes a suggestion, Abby reveals that she once dated someone with the same name.
At the hospital, Abby is taken aback by how pregnant Monica looks. Monica hugs Sam but only waves at Abby. She places Sam’s hand on her belly so that he can feel the baby kick.
When a nurse reveals that only two people can attend the pregnancy check, Sam insists that Abby should go in. Annoyed, Monica asks Abby to stand outside while she gets undressed. Dr. Wong is surprised to see Abby again. She says that she assumed the surrogacy was no longer going ahead since Monica attended her recent appointments with her husband. Abby clarifies that Sam is her husband.
Since Monica’s pregnancy can no longer be hidden, Abby suggests that it is time for Monica to leave Stewart Advertising. However, Monica says that she has changed her mind about leaving her job, pointing out that the condition is not in their contract. She is unsympathetic when Abby points out that the surrogacy arrangement could get her into trouble at work. Abby is furious but knows that she cannot afford to upset Monica. Monica agrees to go to Human Resources with Abby and explain the situation. During their conversation, Abby notices that the roots of Monica’s jet-black hair are blond.
As Abby unsuccessfully searches for her letter opener, Denise storms into her office with the printout of an email. Abby realizes that she accidentally copied Denise into an email in which she called her boss a “bitch.” As Abby apologizes, they are joined by Sonia from Human Resources, who asks for a meeting. Monica is already waiting in the conference room and is wearing maternity clothes at work for the first time. Sonia tells Denise about the surrogacy agreement, suggesting that Abby abused her power by asking her assistant to have the baby. Monica defends Abby, admitting that the surrogacy agreement was her idea and insisting that Abby should not lose her job. Monica agrees to sign a document confirming that she was not coerced into the arrangement.
When Abby tells Sam what happened at work, he praises Monica for saving the day. Abby points out that the disclosure has further damaged her relationship with Denise and would not have been necessary if Monica had quit her job, as agreed. She suggests that Monica’s change of heart indicates that she cannot be trusted to go through with their surrogacy arrangement. Sam reassures her that Monica is focused on attending college, admitting that they discussed her plans over lunch. Sam serves up his homemade meatballs. When Abby discovers that they contain eggshells, they agree to order a pizza.
Abby receives a visit from her former assistant, Gertie. As Gertie limps into the office with homemade cookies, Abby feels a nostalgic fondness for her. Gertie says that she does not plan to return to work and implies that her broken hip occurred when someone pushed her down the stairs. Abby immediately suspects Monica.
Abby is exhausted. Although her doctor has prescribed sleeping pills, she has not taken them for a week, concerned that they will show up on the annual drug screening at work. Shelley reveals that she overheard Monica talking to coworkers about her pregnancy. She gave the impression that she was keeping the baby, claiming that she had a serious boyfriend and that they planned to call the child David. Alarmed, Abby recalls that Sam wanted to call the baby David after his late father. However, she opposed the suggestion, having once dated someone with that name.
Abby decides to contact Monica’s roommate, Chelsea, to learn more about her assistant’s state of mind. However, Chelsea’s number is no longer operational. Sam seems unconcerned when Abby reveals her worries, although he admits to telling Monica about how he wanted to call “his” baby David. Abby points out his verbal slip, stating that they will both be the baby’s parents. Sam reminds Abby that the surrogacy was her idea and that he initially opposed it. Abby corrects her husband, stating, “It was Monica’s idea” (172).
The ominous atmosphere of the novel intensifies as Monica is increasingly blatant in her intention to seduce Sam and keep the baby. Her evident satisfaction when medical professionals mistake Sam for her husband and her revelation to coworkers that she intends to call the baby David make this agenda clear. Narrative tension escalates as Abby becomes convinced that Monica is dangerous. Abby’s suspicion that her assistant caused Gertie’s accident hints at the violence of which Monica is capable.
The power dynamic between the main female characters continues to shift further in Monica’s favor. Her growing confidence is illustrated as she drops the pretense of admiring Abby and treats her increasingly coolly. Monica demonstrates her upper hand by making Abby wait outside while she undresses for the hospital checkup. The incident contrasts with Monica’s insistence that Abby stay with her while she undressed at the beginning of her pregnancy. Her sudden desire for privacy figuratively signals to Abby that Monica is not the “open book” she initially claimed to be.
The Cuddles presentation underlines how Monica seems to overshadow Abby in every area of her life. Jed’s uncharacteristic failure to flirt with Abby suggests that her sexual allure has faded in direct correlation to her confidence. Meanwhile, Monica’s arrival in a revealing blouse has a noticeable impact on every man in the room. Monica also ousts Abby professionally when she “saves” the presentation, prompting Denise to describe her as a “rising star.” The role reversal between the protagonist and her assistant is illustrated when Abby is instructed to clear away the cups from the meeting, while Monica talks to Cuddles’s marketing executives. Monica’s open defiance of Abby when she refuses to give up her job and tells Sam the baby’s sex demonstrates her confidence that she is now in control.
The theme of Deception and Trust in Relationships continues to be highlighted through Monica’s appearance. Abby’s realization that her assistant is naturally blond highlights Monica’s deliberate attempt to resemble her. By dying her hair, Monica emulates the “type” of woman Sam is physically attracted to. The ploy also helped her gain Abby’s initial trust, as she had perceived her assistant as a younger version of herself. The motif of clothing again highlights Monica’s skill in projecting a misleading image as she successfully conceals her advanced pregnancy at work. Meanwhile, at her hospital appointments, she dresses to emphasize her pregnancy to Sam. Monica’s first appearance at work in maternity clothes is significantly timed to coincide with her reveal of the surrogacy agreement to her employers. Although Monica states that Abby did not coerce her into the surrogacy, her prominent baby bump creates the visual impression of vulnerability.
As Abby’s life spirals out of her control, the narrative charts the physical and psychological toll on her character. Suffering from insomnia and exhaustion, she observes, “I look really tired. Like I’m ten years older than I actually am” (168). Abby is shown to visibly age as a result of Monica’s psychological manipulation. Furthermore, Sam’s apparent obliviousness to Monica’s machinations leaves the protagonist isolated and lonely. Growing unease about Monica and her own inexplicable errors at work causes Abby to conclude, “I must be losing my mind” (137). At this point in the narrative, readers are invited to question whether the protagonist is an unreliable narrator, a common trope of psychological thrillers. It remains unclear whether Abby’s perceptions are accurate or distorted by her mental state.
