Back at home, Elena and Nico talk intimately in the living room. Elena tells Nico she wants to give him oral sex but she’s never done it before. A surprised Nico agrees. Later on, Nico remembers Gianna’s warning and realizes she was right. He’s fallen for Elena and doesn’t know if she reciprocates. He gets up to go do a job. When he returns, he finds Elena in bed. He studies her sleeping body, desperate to make her love him.

She pushes back, insisting she still wants her wedding. He says they can keep those plans but he wants them to marry immediately.

After Nico leaves for the day, Elena takes Nico’s banking information and heads to her uncle’s restaurant. She uses his computer to transfer $2 million from Nico’s account to hers. Then, she heads to the bank and withdraws the money in cash. Outside, she runs into Sebastian. He threatens to tell Nico she ran. She begs him not to and explains the situation, allowing him to accompany her on the next step of her mission.

Chapter 47 Summary: “Nico”

Nico is already distracted from his work when he gets a call from the bank about the suspicious $2-million transfer. He assures the woman it’s normal although it’s not. Back at the house, he discovers that Elena is gone and assumes she stole the money to run off with her secret lover. He calls Christian and tells him to find Elena. Not long later, he informs Nico that Elena is with Sebastian.

The carousel attendant noticed her standing alone in the cold. She lied saying she didn’t have a place to go and he invited her home. She spent some time staying with him. They were intimate, but she didn’t love him. Then one day, the Abellis showed up and murdered him in front of Elena. He had given Elena the plastic ring and she continued wearing it to remind herself she had a debt to pay. She apologizes for stealing Nico’s money and promises to pay her back.

Chapters 42-52 Analysis

The final chapters of The Sweetest Oblivion lead Elena and Nico through their final conflicts and toward their ultimate happy ending. These final chapters trace Elena and Nico’s story through the climax, descending action, denouement, and resolution. As the contemporary romance genre prescribes, Elena and Nico get their happily-ever-after ending once they transcend their relational tensions and realize their intense devotion to one another. Chief amongst these marital conflicts is Elena’s secret past. Throughout the novel, the author has used this narrative mystery to propel the narrative and sustain the tension between Elena and Nico. The narrative sequences that depict Elena stealing Nico’s money and traveling to East Tremont to pay her late lover’s mother act as the narrative climax. The subsequent scenes in which Elena explains her backstory to Nico defuse the narrative tension, flesh out this mysterious aspect of Elena’s personal history, and usher the couple toward renewal and forgiveness.

When Elena and Nico overcome their jealousy and reveal their secrets, they begin to foster a more balanced relationship. Throughout the entirety of the novel, Elena has been on a Quest for Autonomy and Self-Possession. This is indeed why she decides to go through with her money-transfer plan even though she knows it will hurt Nico. When she is with Nico, she experiences “[s]o many feelings, from happiness to anger at [her] situation” (328). She describes these intense emotions “roar[ing] to the surface and vibrat[ing] beneath [her] skin” (328). This figurative language vivifies Elena’s emotional experience and enacts her intense internal conflict. She is falling in love with Nico but she still wants to fulfill the promise she made to herself—atoning for her late lover’s death by offering his grieving family monetary assistance—even if it means betraying Nico’s trust. Once she finally makes good on her promise to herself, she can open herself fully to Nico for the first time. In turn, when Nico learns the truth about Elena’s past relationship, he gains access to her interiority and comes to understand her better.

The scenes that depict Elena and Nico’s second wedding ceremony affect a happy and hopeful narrative mood. Ever since the two got engaged, Elena has feared that Nico would back out of the arrangement—a fear that infuses the narrative and the couple’s relationship with tension. While Elena does want to be her own person, she also cherishes “the Cosa Nostra,” “everything romantic,” and “the structured walls of tradition” (314, 315). She’s therefore thrilled when their marriage becomes permanent. While the first courthouse wedding doesn’t fully satisfy Elena’s expectations or romantic ideals, the second wedding does. It is therefore symbolic of dream-fulfillment. The images of Elena in her dress, saying her vows, kissing Nico, and emerging from the church to find Nico’s surprise carousel gift depict Elena getting everything that she wanted. Her dreams are finally aligning with her reality. In turn, she realizes that she and Nico can preserve the Passion and Desire in Forbidden Romances into the future; their relationship is no longer taboo, but their intense feelings for each other have remained. The novel therefore suggests that connections borne out of forbidden dynamics might evolve into deep, meaningful, and lasting relationships.
