Enduring years of torment from her classmates, she internalizes a sense of unworthiness but channels her energy into running, which eventually earns her a track scholarship to UCLA. In California, she begins to find genuine acceptance among other marginalized individuals and focuses her attention on learning more about her family's hidden past.

Early is a pragmatic, dark-skinned bounty hunter who originally hails from a poor sharecropper family near Mallard. Having carried a torch for Desiree since he delivered groceries to her as a teenager, he drops his professional objective to protect her instead. He serves as a loyal, grounded presence in Desiree's life, unaffected by the social pretensions of her hometown.

Kennedy is the privileged, slightly self-involved daughter of Stella and Blake Sanders. Raised entirely within a wealthy White Californian bubble, she struggles with academic expectations and instead drops out of college to pursue a career as an actress. Her theatrical ambitions frequently clash with her mother's desire for her to live a respectable, conventional life.

Blake is a successful, wealthy marketing executive who falls in love with his secretary and brings her to a life of privilege in Brentwood, California. He comes from old money and remains entirely oblivious to the fact that his wife is a Black woman passing as White, offering her a comfortable but socially insulated life.

Adele is the matriarch of the Vignes family, living in the color-obsessed town of Mallard. Following the traumatic murder of her husband, she raises her twin daughters alone, eventually forcing them to drop out of school to work as maids. She rigidly upholds the town's prejudice, viewing light skin as a mark of superiority and judging anyone who falls outside this standard.

Sam is Desiree's estranged husband and Jude's biological father. Initially a successful and charismatic lawyer, he reveals a violent, abusive nature that forces Desiree to flee with their daughter. Leon is the deceased father of Desiree and Stella. An illiterate but hardworking man who built a successful furniture business in Mallard, his ambition angered local White men, leading to his brutal and unjust murder. His death casts a long, traumatic shadow over the entire Vignes family.

Reese is a handsome White transgender man from Arkansas who flees his intolerant family to transition in Los Angeles. Surviving early hardships, he builds a life surrounded by other marginalized individuals and shares a passion for photography. He forms a deep, loving bond with Jude, though both struggle with intense body image insecurities.

Cindy is the well-behaved daughter of Loretta and Reginald. She attempts to make friends with Kennedy Sanders, inadvertently causing intense anxiety for Stella.
