During the summer of 1999, Dominic drives a Jaguar, an expensive, high-end car. The vehicle draws attention from the team members, since like them, Dominic is quite young and it would be unusual for someone in their early twenties to have the funds to purchase such a car. The car symbolizes how Dominic’s arrogance and callousness make it easy for the team members to believe the worst about him. Dominic is conceited and likes to show off, flaunting his good looks and superficial charm. When the team members learn that Dominic owns the car because it belonged to his parents who died in an accident while driving it, they are appalled.
Dominic’s decision to drive the car anyway seems like evidence that he does not experience normal emotional responses: Most people would be saddened or disgusted by the car’s connection to his tragic history. This vulgar display makes it easy for the others (especially Will) to turn against Dominic and for Lily to readily believe he would score high on the assessment for personality traits associated with psychopathy. However, since it is later established that Dominic scored within the normal range on the Wasp Trap assessment, the Jaguar symbolizes how the insecure peacocking of an arrogant young man can be mistaken for true evil.
The secret passage is a powerful symbol of the repressed histories and buried guilt that exist just beneath the surface of the characters’ lives. Located within the supposedly perfect Notting Hill house, the passage is initially dismissed by Georgina and Theo as “a load of rubbish” (28), a denial that mirrors their refusal to acknowledge the dark foundations upon which their life is built. (Theo blackmailed his way into a lucrative career, while Georgina likewise blackmailed Marlowe and concealed murder). The fact that the passage is real, although it is initially dismissed as mere rumor, mirrors the confusion between truth and deception that is present throughout the narrative. No one knows what is concealed within the house, just as no one seems to know the full range of secrets hidden by the various characters.
The passage represents a tangible underworld of hidden truths, a Gothic remnant inside a modern fortress that demonstrates the impossibility of constructing a flawless facade over a corrupt history. It is the space where the narrative’s most significant secrets are physically stored and threatens the home’s structural and moral integrity. Mia’s eventual discovery of the passage is a symbolic unearthing of this repressed history, proving that buried truths will inevitably resurface. While a site of concealment, the passage also becomes a route to safety, revealing that the truth can lead to liberation.
During the summer of 1999, Sophie practices reading tarot cards. The tarot cards contrast with the atmosphere at Thornwood, which is otherwise devoted to science, technological innovation, and logic. The tarot cards symbolize how humans are ultimately driven by emotion and instinct at the expense of logic and reason. When Dominic comes to Sophie’s room to have his cards read, he unleashes a series of events with dramatic ramifications. Will misreads the situation as evidence that Dominic and Sophie are sleeping together, and this prompts him to retaliate by sleeping with Georgina and then coldly cutting Sophie off.
Rather than using logic and language to ask Sophie what happened, Will operates based on the visceral emotions of anger, jealousy, and betrayal. Dominic interprets the cards that Sophie reads as a sign that he should pursue Eve, and this leads to the confrontation between them, Eve’s death, and Dominic becoming captive to Marlowe for decades. Dominic is already feeling lust and entitlement toward Eve, so he interprets the cards as telling him what he wants to hear. Despite sophisticated psychological assessments being developed by Lily, Dominic relies on an ancient and mystical tool to guide his decision making and then acts impulsively and violently. The presence of the tarot cards symbolize how innate human instincts such as lust, anger, and violence can never be fully tamed by science or reason.
