Chapter 57 Summary: “Isaiah”

As warships section off Goldpass, Isaiah spots Milani’s vessel. Despite Kaden’s warnings, Isaiah insists on boarding to rescue Imogen, a mind-controlled captive. Kaden reluctantly agrees, and they transform into birds to infiltrate the ship.

Once aboard, they assume soldier forms and split up. Isaiah follows a pull that leads him directly to Imogen. He crashes into her room and kills the guards. Speaking the command words, he puts Imogen to sleep and gathers her into his arms. As he carries her through the tilting ship, he promises no one will ever hurt her again. Below, some warships begin evacuating, suggesting that Nismera’s forces have secured the medallion.

Chapter 58 Summary: “Kaden”

After Isaiah signals to him, Kaden kills a soldier and steals data before transforming and escaping. He and Isaiah land in Goldpass’s deserted town square. They have missed the end of the fight: While protecting the city, Samkiel was ambushed and captured. Suddenly, soldiers beam the unconscious Samkiel toward a ship. Kaden realizes Dianna is nearby and fears she will be killed.

Dianna charges after the ship in her winged form. When the ship fires energy cannons, she dodges the first blast but flies into a wall of flames. Kaden instinctively launches himself into the air and catches her burning body before they crash, taking the brunt of the impact.

Holding Dianna’s severely burned form, Kaden experiences unexpected emotions. Isaiah offers to abandon Samkiel, but Kaden refuses. Despite the possessive voice whispering that he could keep Dianna, Kaden recognizes that she is not his. He opens a portal, and they return to Samkiel’s palace.

Chapter 59 Summary: “Dianna”

Dianna wakes in a bedroom, healed, and rushes to Samkiel’s study. She learns that she was unconscious for a day and that Imogen has been recovered. Dianna demands that they immediately rescue Samkiel, but Kaden and Isaiah argue against rushing in without a plan.

Kaden reveals that Milani is Samkiel’s former consort and Queen of the Southern Realms. She possesses weapons designed by Samkiel. He reminds Dianna how easily he manipulated her through her sister, claiming that love makes people irrational. Dianna slaps him.

After hours of planning, they devise a strategy to infiltrate Milani’s fleet. Reggie encourages Dianna to make a bold proclamation. When Dianna questions herself, Kaden surprises everyone by affirming that she was born to be Queen of Rashearim and encouraging her to claim that power. When Dianna asks what he stands to gain, Kaden answers that he wants her alive.

Chapter 60 Summary: “Camilla”

Hours earlier, Camilla and Vincent flee through Goldpass as winged, muscular soldiers called adrueth land. They hide in an alley, needing a distraction to escape.

Dianna and Samkiel join the fight, while Camilla and Vincent use the chaos to run toward the docks. They watch Dianna in her beast form ripping ships from the sky while Samkiel redirects wreckage away from civilians.

A disabled ship hurtles toward them. Camilla forms a green wall, stopping the craft. The medallion in her pocket hums. The ship dissolves into black ash. The crowd watches in awe.

A commander demands the medallion. She kills the commander, and chaos erupts. More ships arrive, and soldiers descend and sever Camilla’s hands. An adrueth female holds a blade to Vincent’s throat. Camilla offers to trade the medallion for Vincent’s life. The adrueth reveals that the medallion will bring the end of the world and refuses.

Camilla’s hands magically regrow. She explodes the adrueth’s head, but Vincent is stabbed through the chest. Camilla surrenders and tosses the medallion away. The soldiers flee with it. She heals Vincent.

A hooded woman with assassins emerges. She offers to take them to Sumaril in exchange for helping her meet Dianna, claiming she wants an alliance with Dianna, to whom she owes a debt. Camilla agrees.

Chapter 61 Summary: “Samkiel”

Samkiel awakens in a luxurious room in Trugarum, home of his former lover Milani. He hopes to negotiate a peace treaty.

Adrueth guards enter with Ennis, Milani’s brother. Ennis activates a silver collar on Samkiel’s neck, sending pain through his body. Samkiel reflects on his past and how Dianna became the only one he desires.

He is brought to Milani, who is nude and attempts to seduce him. He rebuffs her, stating that their relationship ended and he wants peace. She ignores him. He sends a small jolt of electricity through her, warning that the collar dampens but does not tame his power. He tells her Dianna owns his heart and will scorch Milani if she continues.

Enraged, Milani has him escorted back to his room. He worries about Dianna’s arrival, knowing Milani’s weaponry is nearly unstoppable due to information he gave her long ago.

Chapter 62 Summary: “Samkiel”

Days pass with Milani’s failed seductions and Ennis torturing Samkiel. During a meal, thunder from a clear sky signals Dianna’s arrival. Milani demands Samkiel’s attention. When he admits he was not listening, Ennis activates the collar, causing him intense pain.

Milani suggests an alliance with Nismera, including marriage. He rejects her. She twice mispronounces Dianna’s name. Samkiel angrily corrects her, declaring that Dianna will be queen. Milani sends him away.

A guard follows Samkiel into his room. The guard’s form melts to reveal Dianna in disguise. She reveals that Kaden, Isaiah, and Cameron are also aboard. She expresses jealousy over Milani. They argue about his desire for peace versus her desire to destroy the fleet. She confesses that she fought with Kaden, who hurt her by bringing up Gabby’s death. Dianna breaks down, and Samkiel comforts her, filled with rage toward Kaden. She shares her plan with him before slipping away.

Chapter 63 Summary: “Cameron”

Dianna shows a stolen map to Cameron, Kaden, and Isaiah. Kaden and Isaiah suggest a safer evacuation route, which Dianna accepts. She leaves.

The three men, disguised, work undercover. Cameron confronts Kaden about his feelings for Dianna and mentioning Gabby’s death. He also confronts Isaiah about his brutal past and feelings for Imogen. Cameron accuses both brothers of being monsters who will die alone. His words appear to affect them.

The brothers depart, and Cameron joins a work crew. He realizes the crew is not making repairs but reinforcing the walls. He concludes that the mothership is a massive dock designed for annihilation, capable of discharging thousands of soldiers.

Chapter 64 Summary: “Samkiel”

Milani summons Samkiel, claiming that she wants to discuss peace. Ennis uses the collar to force Samkiel to reciprocate a hug.

Milani straddles him and reveals that the collar uses a neurotoxin that dulls his powers. He rebuffs her. She slaps him and has Ennis torture him. She then stabs him in the gut with a shimmering memory dagger Kaden made, chanting a spell to make him love only her as the magic leaches into his body. He feels it searching for his memories of Dianna before he loses consciousness.

Chapter 65 Summary: “Dianna”

Dianna and Cameron, in disguise, patrol the ship. Dianna transforms into a mouse to navigate the ventilation system. She reaches the main holding dock, guesses the access code, and views weapon schematics.

Samkiel enters with a blank expression and attacks her. They fight briefly until Milani appears, revealing that he is no longer Dianna’s boyfriend. Samkiel knocks Dianna unconscious.

Dianna awakens bound and wearing a spiked collar. She sees Milani sitting on Samkiel’s lap. Ennis demonstrates the collar’s power, sending intense pain through Dianna. Milani taunts her, threatening to have sex with Samkiel in front of her.

Provoked, Dianna mocks Milani until she reveals crucial information: Nismera plans to use the medallion to open portals to other realms ruled by Sovereigns, which she intends to conquer. Milani’s warships will bring Nismera’s army through these portals.

Having baited Milani, Dianna makes eye contact with Samkiel, who breaks character. Milani realizes she has been deceived. Dianna burns through her bonds, and armor forms over both her and Samkiel.

Milani screams for guards, but Dianna reveals that she poisoned their water supply and created gas leaks. She snaps her fingers, and the room explodes.

Chapter 66 Summary: “Samkiel”

Explosions fill the sky as Dianna’s sabotaged warships are destroyed. Kaden, Isaiah, and Cameron attack the remaining ships. Samkiel and Dianna fight soldiers aboard another burning warship.

Dianna expresses guilt for putting Samkiel in the situation with Milani. Samkiel comforts her, insisting that it was a joint decision.

Dianna vows that he is her priority. Samkiel explains that the memory dagger failed because his bond with her is imprinted on his soul. His words heal a fractured part of her heart.

They share a passionate kiss. Cameron interrupts, reporting that many ships have fled. Dianna orders them to disable as many as possible. Cameron addresses her as your grace, which she explains is his and Reggie’s way of ensuring that the brothers show her respect. Samkiel senses Kaden nearby and leaves to confront him.

Chapter 67 Summary: “Samkiel”

Samkiel disables a warship and finds Kaden. He attacks Kaden for hurting Dianna with his words about Gabby. During their brutal fight, Samkiel rips out Kaden’s tongue. The ship crashes, and they crawl from the wreckage. Kaden’s tongue regrows.

Samkiel pummels him but stops when he realizes that Kaden wants the beating as penance. Kaden confesses his deep love for Dianna, explaining she was a light in his darkness. He gives Samkiel a dagger and begs him to cut the feelings out.

Kaden concedes that Samkiel has won and vows to no longer pursue Dianna. Samkiel asks what happened with Nismera. Kaden avoids the question. Samkiel accuses Kaden of being a beast on Death’s leash.

Kaden accepts that he deserves punishment but begs for Isaiah’s freedom, offering his own life as payment. He claims that Isaiah’s loyalty to him was his downfall. The destroyed ship explodes behind them as they walk away.

Chapter 68 Summary: “Nismera”

A few days later, Nismera’s councilor Rolluse reports that Dianna destroyed much of the armada and allied with the sons of Unir. Milani and Ennis are in comas. Rolluse fears that Dianna’s power could rival Nismera’s. Councilor Tora warns that other rulers may defect.

Nismera concludes that as long as Dianna lives, her reign will not last.

Later, Nismera rages at a statue of her former lover, Nydmjir. She recalls murdering him to get the original medallion, but Unir destroyed it. Her lover, the god Blayne, arrives. She mentions that the fates she holds prisoner have gone “insane,” whispering of war and Dianna’s name. She recalls their prophecy: As long as Dianna lives, Nismera’s reign will end.

Blayne reports that his attempts to seduce Xavier have failed. Nismera reveals that they have moved to manipulating Xavier with fabricated images to turn him against his allies. Nismera reveals that Samkiel is Oblivion itself. Blayne advises a public display of power. They have rough sex in front of Nydmjir’s statue.

Chapter 69 Summary: “Camilla”

Camilla bathes in Sumaril, feeling drained of magic. Vincent returns with food, distant and troubled. He tells her that she should not have given up the medallion for his worthless life.

Camilla is hurt and tells him his life is not worthless. Vincent confesses his deep, long-held love for her, explaining that he has watched over her for years. He pledges his life and loyalty to her.

Camilla kisses him and pledges herself to him. Their reconciliation turns passionate. Vincent performs oral sex on Camilla. Later, she sees that a bedpost is broken and wonders if her magic has returned. He refuses to let her pleasure him in return, stating that tonight is about her. He feeds her, and they spend the night talking and laughing.

Chapter 70 Summary: “Dianna”

Samkiel and Isaiah argue in the kitchen over Isaiah’s request to have Imogen stay in his room. Samkiel refuses, stating that the cells are the only secure place. Isaiah asks Dianna to read his intentions. She senses that his feelings for Imogen are protective, but still denies his request.

Isaiah claims that Imogen has slept with him before, enraging Samkiel. Isaiah clarifies that they slept together in the literal sense but did not have sex. He then storms out.

To de-escalate, Samkiel declares a day off and takes the group to a secret beach. They find the people thriving. Cameron, Samkiel, Dianna, and Miska play a ball game with local children. Miska has painted Reggie’s and Cameron’s nails blue.

After the game, Dianna and Samkiel watch Cameron and Reggie bicker like family. Dianna asks how long their break will last. Samkiel says that it will last until Kaden and Isaiah return.

Chapter 71 Summary: “Kaden”

Kaden and Isaiah arrive in the ruins of Sumaril. Kaden tosses a gold coin into a fountain to summon the assassins. They are surrounded.

A slender female assassin, the queen of the shadow organization, steps from the darkness. She reveals that she knew their father, Unir, and that he is now a ghost. Isaiah is visibly hurt that their father has not contacted them.

Kaden explains their mission: to ask for the assassins’ allegiance to Samkiel against Nismera. Kaden reject’s the queen’s suggestion that he take the assassins for himself.

The queen senses that Death is connected to Kaden. Kaden explains that Samkiel needs an army that does not operate with the same righteousness he does.

She reveals she has already pledged her allegiance, but not to Samkiel. She declares that her loyalty is to Dianna, to whom she owes a life debt. She disappears back into the shadows.

Chapter 72 Summary: “Dianna”

Samkiel and Dianna discuss their plan to rescue more children. Dianna proposes finding Gathrriel’s chalice, which could provide a power boost and prevent casualties. Samkiel agrees. Dianna emphasizes the need to protect their city. As the sun sets, Kaden and Isaiah fly toward their home palace. Samkiel and Dianna head back to learn if the assassins have been secured.

Chapter 73 Summary: “Xavier”

Summoned by Blayne, Xavier and Jaycee attend an emergency council meeting. Nismera enters wearing Unir’s crown. She reveals that Dianna destroyed her fleet and warns that Dianna is now a powerful Ig’Morruthen who follows no rules. She mentions that Samkiel has his brothers at his side. Nismera offers an alliance, warning that offspring of Samkiel and Dianna would be unstoppable god-Ig’Morruthen hybrids wielding Oblivion. She calls Samkiel the prophesied World Ender. While a few protest, most of the council remains silent. Athos agrees to consider the offer. Xavier realizes she successfully sowed fear, positioning herself as an ally.

Chapter 74 Summary: “Dianna”

Before departing for Nismera’s palace with Samkiel and Reggie, Dianna speaks privately with Kaden. She tells him they must stop hurting each other, as they are bound by Death. She acknowledges his potential for good. Kaden apologizes for everything. Dianna coldly replies that his apology means nothing. As she and Samkiel prepare to leave, Kaden offers a cryptic warning about how searching for the dead can lead one closer to the afterlife.

Chapter 75 Summary: “Camilla”

Camilla and Vincent meet with Faye, the Queen of Assassins, in her underground fortress. Faye explains that she wants to secure favor with Dianna, whom she views as a leader capable of challenging Nismera. She expresses admiration for Dianna’s power. Faye reveals that Kaden and Isaiah recently visited and are no longer allied with Nismera. Camilla points out that Dianna dislikes them, so presenting them as a peace offering will not work. Faye then reveals that her true intention was never to help them. She plans to capture them and present them as enemies to Dianna to secure a permanent alliance. Assassins emerge from the shadows. Before Camilla can react, she is knocked unconscious.

Chapters 57-75 Analysis

Kaden’s evolving characterization further reveals Monstrosity and Heroism as Artificial Categories. Ever since he transformed Dianna into an Ig’Morruthen and forced her into servitude in The Book of Azrael, Kaden has been Dianna’s primary antagonist. Here, his self-destructive desire for penance and his instinctive rescue of Dianna from a warship’s flames marks a significant break from his antagonistic role. This internal shift culminates in his confrontation with Samkiel, where he does not fight back but instead accepts punishment as a form of absolution. He confesses the torment of his love for Dianna, begging Samkiel to “[c]arve out the heart that still beats only for her” (506). This plea reveals that the source of his past monstrosity—his possessive love—is now the wellspring of his suffering and repentance. By relinquishing his claim on Dianna and rejecting the assassins’ offer to build his own kingdom, Kaden chooses self-abnegation over power, repositioning himself as a tragic figure seeking redemption.

The recurring motif of brotherhood challenges the straightforward allegiances of the central conflict. The bond between Kaden and Isaiah overrides even the potential collapse of their world when Kaden states, “If I have to choose between the world and my brother, it will be you” (431). This loyalty contrasts with the violent, yet cathartic, relationship between Samkiel and Kaden. Their brutal fight functions less as a battle between enemies and more as an exorcism of past betrayals and unspoken feelings, leading to Kaden’s eventual surrender. Isaiah’s protective obsession with Imogen mirrors this dynamic, demonstrating a capacity for care that complicates his reputation. These fraternal bonds exist outside the primary political and romantic conflicts, creating a volatile substructure of loyalty that drives character decisions.

Dianna’s evolves into a calculating, strategic leader. Initially, her love for Samkiel compels her toward reckless action, a tendency Kaden critiques by reminding her how easily he once manipulated her through her love for her sister (detailed in The Book of Azrael). Following this confrontation, she channels her rage into a meticulous plan to infiltrate Milani’s fleet. This mission showcases her capacity for deception and leadership, culminating in her outmaneuvering Milani by baiting her into revealing Nismera’s entire plan. Kaden’s unexpected endorsement of her as the true “Queen of Rashearim” (448) forces Dianna to confront her own potential as a ruler. The allegiance she subsequently earns from Faye, the Queen of Assassins, is based on a perceived capacity for revolutionary power, solidifying the idea that true leadership is earned by forging connections based on mutual support, not by threatening others into submission. Dianna’s rise thus exposes the limits of Fear as a Tool of Political Domination.

The narrative expands its scope from a war for a throne to a multiversal crisis through the symbolic function of the medallion. Throughout the novel, the medallion has served the narrative function of a MacGuffin—an object that drives the plot as various characters race to be the first to find it. Milani’s revelation that Nismera intends to use the artifact to open portals to realms ruled by powerful beings called Sovereigns transforms the object into a symbol of cosmic transgression and boundless ambition. This disclosure elevates the stakes of the conflict, recasting Nismera as a potential conqueror of entire realities. The introduction of the Sovereigns serves a crucial world-building function, establishing a cosmic hierarchy that contextualizes the current war as a small part of a much larger universal order. This expansion foreshadows future conflicts and reframes the immediate struggle against Nismera’s pursuit of power.

Structurally, these chapters utilize shifting perspectives to build suspense and explore the fragile, transactional nature of alliances. By presenting events through the eyes of multiple characters—including Dianna, Samkiel, Kaden, Cameron, and Camilla—the narrative creates dramatic irony, allowing the reader to assemble a more complete picture of the unfolding chaos than any single character possesses. This technique underscores a constant state of peril and betrayal. The seemingly straightforward rescue mission is complicated by Kaden’s emotional confession and Cameron’s discovery of the mothership’s true purpose as a military dock. Likewise, Camilla and Vincent’s search for refuge ends in Faye’s cold, strategic betrayal, illustrating that in this world, loyalty is a commodity traded for power and survival. This web of precarious relationships ensures a persistent narrative tension, where alliances are constantly tested and redefined by self-interest.
