Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Randall Fraser is the protagonist and occasional narrator of the Outlander series. Claire was born in England in 1918. Her parents died when she was young, so she grew up with her uncle, an archeologist, and often lived in unfamiliar places where she needed to adapt. Claire was a headstrong young girl and refused to go to boarding school, instead wanting to explore with her uncle. Claire met her first husband, a historian named Frank Randall, when he came to consult with her uncle. The two were married shortly before World War II, and both later joined the war effort and were often separated. Claire worked as a field nurse, where she tended to soldiers in the most desperate conditions. After the war, Claire and Frank took a vacation to the Scottish Highlands to reconnect, but while there, Claire discovered the standing stone that transported her back to 1743.

Claire’s time in the past intersected with various historical events such as the Jacobite uprising and the prelude to the French Revolution.
