Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Book Collection”

In this activity, students create a collection of 5 or more books that have inspired them to achieve a goal.

Steve used books he read to help him overcome his unhappy home life, create a guide for how to behave in difficult situations, and inspire his identity. Create a collection of 5 books you have read that have inspired you to overcome adversity, respond to difficult situations, or alter your identity. Use the bullet points below as a guide.

  • Select 5 books that have inspired you in some way.
  • Print copies of the covers of your selected books or bring physical copies of the books to class.
  • Create a brief synopsis of each book, explaining what it is about.
  • Explain how each book inspired you and why you would recommend it.
  • Share your books with others.

Prepare some comments to explain your choices when you share with the group.

Teaching Suggestion: Those who print the covers of the books might create a poster with the books they selected for the presentation. For those who have physical copies, it will be helpful to offer the use of a display shelf for students to place their books on while they are talking about them.
