“What Happens Next?”

After finishing Among the Hidden, students write their own continuation of Luke’s journey as he becomes Lee Grant.

Luke’s life changes forever at the end of Among the Hidden. He departs his family and assumes the identity of Lee Grant. Luke is headed to an all-boys boarding school, and he’s on a mission to help other shadow children with his new lease on life.

  • Write a 2–3-page continuation of Luke’s journey detailing his first few days at boarding school.
  • Consider the challenges Luke will face having to go by a different name and conceal his true identity.

o How will Luke’s background growing up in isolation impact his social interactions?

o Will Luke have enough knowledge to keep up with the other boys in his grade level?

o What new things will Luke experience going to school for the first time?

  • Although this is a creative writing project and the continuation of the book is up to you, try to be true to the rules of the novel’s dystopian society and do your best to keep Luke’s actions true to his character.
