Fiction | Novel | Middle Grade | Published in 1938

A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides with detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, and more. For select classroom titles, we also provide Teaching Guides with discussion and quiz questions to prompt student engagement.

Discussion/Analysis Prompt

Consider the actions Mr. Popper takes to adapt to the addition of Captain Cook, and later, Captain Cook’s family, to his home. In what ways does Mr. Popper adjust his lifestyle, home, and comfort for his penguins? What sacrifices are made by Mr. Popper’s family for the penguins? Why are they willing to help Mr. Popper?

Teaching Suggestion: Students may find it beneficial to review chronologically the sacrifices and changes made by Mr. Popper and his family; small groups might work together to compile and list ideas. It may be helpful to divide the novel into chapter sections and assign 1-2 sections to each small group; students can share their chapter findings in whole-group discussion. It may be beneficial as well to record findings in the class discussion for use in the activity.

Differentiation Suggestion: Students who benefit from additional assistance with analysis may find it helpful to use visual organizer to chart actions and sacrifices from the story. A simple two-column chart (Mr. Popper/Mr. Popper’s Family) will help students to categorize the sacrifices made by the characters in the novel.
