Activity

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Benefit Event”

In this activity, students organize a fictional benefit event to inspire people to give to a charitable cause.

In the novel, Alex creates a benefit concert for a charitable cause. Design your own fictional benefit event to raise awareness and funds for a cause you support. Outline and explain your idea using presentation software; incorporate images and graphic organizers to communicate a well-designed, comprehensive plan. Use the guidelines below for content to include on each slide.

  • What is your benefit event for?
  • What skill(s) or materials will you sell, provide, or present at the benefit event? (What will draw people to attend?)
  • Where will your benefit event take place?
  • How will the benefit itself be funded?
  • How will you encourage others to give money to the cause?
  • What people will be included in your benefit event?
  • How will you obtain support from the community for your cause?
  • Create an advertisement for your benefit event and explain how you will distribute it.
  • Draw connections between your benefit event and the events that take place in the novel.
