Long Answer

1. At the beginning of the novel, Mariatu spends a lot of time with her family and her cousins. She relates to them because of their shared experiences. As Mariatu becomes a Canadian citizen, she has fewer shared experiences with her family and realizes how impoverished and far removed her family’s experiences are from hers. (Various chapters)

2. Mariatu is brutally attacked at the beginning of the memoir, which eventually leads to the article in the newspaper that takes her to Canada. Upon returning to Sierra Leone, she realizes how impoverished her home country is, especially compared to her new life in Canada, and she wants to help the people there.
