Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Design an Ofrenda”

In this activity, students will design their own ofrenda in a digital or physical format using key elements.

When Sophia goes to Saint Luke’s, one of the ways she stays connected to her family and culture is to build an ofrenda, or alter, in her dorm room. To complete a similar activity on your own, choose one of the following options:

Option 1: Design a digital ofrenda in an online format approved by your teacher.

Option 2: Build a physical ofrenda in the form of a 3D shoebox model.

Option 3: Create an artistic ofrenda using art supplies, photographs, and magazine clippings in the form of a single- or three-panel poster.

Read “How to Make an Ofrenda for Día de Muertos” to discover what items you will need to include. When you have collected and/or designed your items, arrange them as desired. Next, write a reflection about the significance of at least three items included in your alter.

Share or display your ofrenda and discuss your choices with your peers.
