“Prejudice and Discrimination PSA”
In this activity, students will discuss and analyze instances of prejudice and discrimination in the novel and create a campaign to bring awareness to one of the issues.
Many characters in the novel experience some form of prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice is when someone has a negative opinion about a group of people that is not based on facts or evidence. Discrimination is when someone acts on that opinion, which could be violent or non-violent.
Focus on the experiences of one of these characters and identify occasions when they face prejudice or discrimination based on their identity.
Present your poster to the class. In your presentation, describe the issue that your character faced and what someone could do to help. Reflect on the prejudice or discrimination that you face in your own life or that you have witnessed. What can you do to fight discrimination?
Teaching Suggestion: You may want to have students look at examples of real public service announcements or campaigns to help them understand what they should put on their poster.
Consider displaying students’ posters in the classroom or in the hallways to promote awareness of discrimination. A gallery walk would also be helpful for students to reflect on the issues that other characters faced.
Differentiation Suggestion: To extend the lesson for advanced learners, students could research historic examples of discrimination that different groups of people have faced. They could create an infographic that could focus on a timeline of events or the impact of discrimination on specific marginalized groups.
