Adrian is never home and has become distant. Vanessa tries to convince herself he’s just catching up on work, but she feels “Like he was working himself to the bone, to fill the void, mourning me, and I wasn’t even gone yet” (306). Since Brent is working on his business and her father got a job, Vanessa is mostly alone. To distract herself from not thinking about Adrian, she finishes her end-of-life planning by making her funeral arrangements, appointing Drake in charge of scattering her ashes in the ocean and booking her entire family a cruise after her death. The last remaining task is planning for Grace, but Annabel is still in rehab and won’t return Vanessa’s calls.
Vanessa books a night for Adrian and herself at a bed and breakfast for New Year’s and arranges for Grace to stay with Gerald. Having heard little from Adrian, she sends him the details and heads to the B&B. Adrian calls to say he can’t make dinner because his client, Garcia, was arrested in Wisconsin. Vanessa is angry and accuses Adrian of pulling away from her because he can’t handle the situation and using work as an excuse. Adrian says that his work is essential to him, especially if Vanessa isn’t going to act regarding her health situation. Vanessa begs him not to spend their precious time arguing, but Adrian gives her an “ultimatum.” If she won’t see a doctor and seek treatment if she’s diagnosed with ALS, then he can’t be with her. Vanessa curses him and hangs up.
Vanessa concedes that the breakup is partly her fault because she lured Adrian with “false advertising” or “clickbait”; he didn’t fully understand what he was getting into. She travels to Iowa to spend New Year’s with Annabel in her rehab facility. Annabel knows about Vanessa’s wrist weakness, and in part, it’s what sparked her relapse. Gerald and Brent know this too, and their awareness that they might lose Vanessa sent them all into a downward spiral. Vanessa feels the weight of how ALS continues to affect their family. Annabel explains that rehab has taught her to be honest, and she doesn’t want to be a mother. Vanessa empathizes with her and realizes Annabel is too young to handle this. She agrees to find a family for Grace. Annabel is relieved that Vanessa understands. For the first time, she begins to talk about her future, discussing going to college and helping Brent with the business.
As Vanessa prepares to drive home, she realizes that there’s nothing left for her in St. Paul and that being there will only burden her family, who are finally in a good place for the first time. Since Grace is safe with her father and she and Adrian are over, Vanessa decides to disappear and continue her travels, but this time without a camera crew. Her only regret is that she didn’t say goodbye to Grace, a child she’s come to love as her own.
It has been two days since Adrian spoke to Vanessa. He knows he was wrong to give her an ultimatum and regrets every word he said. Feeling like he has hit “rock bottom,” he cannot leave his apartment and hopes she will return. Becky is distraught because Vanessa has posted a video entitled “Goodbye Forever.” Adrian watches the footage that Vanessa filmed at the airport. She tearfully thanks her fans for all their support and explains that she believes she is experiencing early symptoms of ALS and wants to continue her journey in private. Eventually, there will be more videos, but they won’t be posted until after her death. She addresses Adrian directly, thanks him for loving her, even for a short time, and apologizes for not being the partner he needed.
Gerald arrives to pack up Vanessa’s apartment. Adrian begs him to tell him where Vanessa is, but Gerald refuses. Over a drink, he shares with Adrian that Vanessa is “luminous” but stubborn like her mother. Vanessa’s mother also refused treatment, and the car wreck that killed her was likely due to her symptoms. Gerald explains that living with the disease isn’t the hard part; it’s dealing with the loss afterward. He says, “If you can’t handle it now, believe me, you’re not cut out for what’s coming” (331). Gerald likes and respects Adrian but encourages him to continue his life without Vanessa. Gerald now has custody of Grace and offers an open invitation for Adrian to visit.
Two months later, Vanessa is on Drake’s private island for his and Laird’s wedding. Brent and Joel are there to discuss business since Drake is an investor. Before coming to the island, Vanessa had traveled all over Europe but found no peace. She feels lost without Adrian. Additionally, her wrist numbness extends up her arm, and she can see the beginning of muscle atrophy. She shut off her social media and cut contact with Gerald and Annabel, seeing the necessity of forcing them to function without her.
Laird is shooting content for Drake’s channel, where Vanessa will appear, when Brent shouts that Chrissy Teigen is tweeting about Vanessa and the trending hashtag “Where’s Vanessa Price” (338). Tiegen’s article explains that Adrian Copeland is on a global search to find the love of his life, Vanessa Price. After months of therapy to deal with his anxiety, he’s been flying all over the world, along with Grace, whom he’s adopting, to find Vanessa and apologize for his mistake. Just as Vanessa tries to find her phone to call Adrian, she hears him calling her name and sees him running toward her on the beach. Vanessa runs into Adrian’s arms as he kisses her and apologizes for disregarding her feelings and squandering their time together. He promises to honor her wishes and faithfully support her no matter how long they have. He explains that the day Gerald unloaded her apartment, he chased him down and asked to have Grace, knowing he was meant to be her father.
It’s 10 months later, and Vanessa is recovering from surgery to remove a benign cyst from her arm, which was the cause of the numbness. Though there’s no guarantee she still won’t get ALS, for now, they can live in relief. Adrian, Vanessa, and Grace have traveled and documented it for the last 10 months. Still, Vanessa hasn’t released a video since Laird captured her and Adrian’s reunion. Adrian uploads 10 months of videos that capture all the ups and downs of their travels, which they hope will kickstart fundraising for ALS once again.
Adrian and Vanessa are married and living off the proceeds of Brent’s thriving lip balm business. Brent and Joel are engaged, and Gerald maintains his job and mental health. Annabel relapsed after getting out of rehab but is sober again and working with Brent. Though she wants to be seen as Grace’s aunt, they have all agreed to be honest with Grace when the time is right. Adrian quit his job when he commenced the search for Vanessa. Now he works as an attorney for disability rights, ensuring public places follow the Americans with Disabilities Act. He continues to attend therapy so he can be the best version of himself for his family and those for whom he advocates.
The third-act breakup, a romance genre convention, stems from Adrian and Vanessa’s fear and desire for self-protection, but it also allows them to develop Resilience Amid Adversity. Adrian’s ultimatum, which he calls “an act of desperation from a despondent, sleep-deprived man who was descending into madness” (324), is fueled not by fear of illness but by preemptive grief. He’s trying to brace himself for a loss he hasn’t yet endured, which is emotionally paralyzing. Adrian must come to terms with the fact that loving Vanessa means accepting uncertainty and potential heartbreak. His journey from fear to acceptance is not just about Vanessa’s health but learning to be present in life and love. Vanessa concedes to the separation because she believes she spares Adrian from future pain. She feels that committing to a relationship is reckless and unfair. Her entire life philosophy is built on the idea of living for the moment while expecting the worst. She doesn’t want Adrian to go through the anguish of watching her deteriorate. Her choice to walk away is an act of love as she protects him, even if it breaks her heart.
Jimenez continues to use clickbait titles for each chapter in this section. This stylistic choice allows her to continue to develop intrigue and create titles that draw contrasts, as the titles often present a title that provide an appealing yet incomplete snapshot of the plot developments contained within each chapter. Additionally, Vanessa frames her relationship with Adrian through the lens of her career as a content creator. Following their breakup, she believes it is partially her fault because she attracted him with “clickbait,” as he didn’t fully know everything about Vanessa’s life, including her familial experience with ALS and fear that she will develop the disease. This highlights how Jimenez uses Vanessa’s job in a layered way throughout the narrative. Clickbait is both a part of Vanessa’s identity as an influencer and represents the curated personas she and others present to people, online and in intimate relationships. By paralleling Vanessa’s professional tendency to package content in enticing, surface-level ways with the clickbait-style chapter titles, Jimenez underscores the tension between outward appearance and the complexities of internal and interpersonal dynamics.
Adrian has spent most of the novel learning to be present, manage his anxiety, and open his heart again. When Vanessa disappears, it forces him to confront the reality that love is worth fighting for. Adrian’s decision to seek therapy for his anxiety displays his willingness to face discomfort for the sake of connection and love. Therapy teaches Adrian internal resilience rather than external control. Instead of being ruled by fear, he works through it, acknowledging that fear doesn’t have to dictate his decisions. His ability to overcome his fear symbolizes the emotional risks he takes in his relationship with Vanessa and precipitates their reconciliation. Adrian’s character growth enables him to claim a deeper freedom, not just in the ability to travel but also in the capacity to love without needing guarantees. Adrian’s grand gesture leads to an emotional breakthrough in their relationship, symbolizing his character transformation and emotional courage. Boarding a plane and flying across the world to say he loves her no matter what reframes his earlier ultimatum into an expression of unconditional love and acceptance.
Vanessa’s relationship with Adrian helps her see how much she has normalized being the one who holds everything together for others, without expecting or asking for help in return. She also recognizes that love and loyalty don’t mean sacrificing herself to meet other people’s needs. She establishes boundaries, accepts help, and prioritizes her emotional well-being and happiness. Her eyes open to the codependent relationship she has with her family, and she learns that she can love her family and still say no. The Transformative Power of Love and Connection with Adrian has shown Vanessa what family should look like, and she releases her family to survive and thrive without her, thus freeing herself from the physical and emotional burdens of caring for three adults.
The epilogue reveals that Vanessa still doesn’t know whether she carries the gene. However, instead of letting that unknown control her, she and Adrian focus on joy and Living in the Present, as evidenced by their decision to refrain from releasing the footage of their travels until after they return. They live with intention, embracing each day not because Vanessa might die soon but because their life deserves to be lived, and they prioritize family and connection. Adrian and Vanessa’s happily ever after stems from facing the unknown together. Through the novel’s ending, Jimenez underscores how Vanessa and Adrian’s partnership is built on mutual courage and illustrates that living in the present doesn’t mean ignoring the future but instead refusing to let the fear of it rob you of today.
