Chapter 1 Summary: “Heard Crying From Next Door, What I Found Was Shocking!: Adrian”

Content Warning: The section of the guide includes discussion of illness, death, and substance use.

Thirty-two-year-old attorney Adrian Copeland is trying to enjoy his last few hours with his girlfriend, Rachel, who is visiting from Seattle. A baby’s incessant crying from the apartment next door keeps them awake. Rachel insists that he speak with the neighbor so they can rest. Adrian knocks on the neighbor’s door, and a woman with spit-up in her hair is holding the squalling infant. Adrian introduces himself and asks if she can do anything about the noise. The woman, exhausted and tearful, explains that she’s tried everything, but the baby won’t stop crying. Instantly feeling guilty upon seeing her exhaustion, Adrian offers to hold the baby while she takes a shower. She’s skeptical, but Adrian introduces himself as the building owner and assures her he’s safe. The woman introduces herself as Vanessa, and Grace is the baby she’s fostering. Adrian doesn’t know much about babies and feels anxious holding the tiny, wailing infant. He notices a tag has been left on her pajamas, and as soon as he removes it, Grace stops crying.

Chapter 2 Summary: “Hot Guy Tames My Baby!: Vanessa”

Vanessa is a travel vlogger on YouTube and depends on her content creation for income. Her channel’s success necessitated hiring a production crew and a camera operator. A few weeks ago, her sister left her baby, Grace, with Vanessa while she went shopping, but she never returned. Now, Vanessa is Grace’s temporary guardian. Vanessa hasn’t left her apartment for days and hasn’t produced any content for her viewers in two weeks. She worries about losing followers and her income stream.

Vanessa realizes Grace has stopped crying, and she panics momentarily. Though she didn’t know Adrian, she’d seen him around the building and noticed his attractiveness. She’s relatively certain every woman in the building has noticed Adrian. Adrian is sitting on her couch holding Grace, who is now sleeping peacefully, and she admits she “fell a little bit in love right there” (11). Without a word, Adrian collects her trash and exits the apartment.

Still stunned, Vanessa grabs her camera and films a video titled “Hot Guy Tames My Baby” (13), knowing it will be clickbait for her followers. She explains briefly how she became Grace’s caregiver and shares the story of Adrian, whom she calls “Jesus’s abs,” coming to her rescue. Though she admits to being attracted to him, she claims she’s “still not on the market for the foreseeable future” (15). Vanessa closes the video by reminding her subscribers to like the video and donate to her charity so they can find a cure for ALS. She wonders how her followers will respond but is not worried since she may not be alive in a year.

Chapter 3 Summary: “Cheater Gets Busted!: Adrian”

Rachel starts packing her things and reveals that she is married and never intended to get into a serious relationship with Adrian. Later at work, Adrian’s paralegal, Becky, notices his sour mood. Adrian says he’s leaving work early, and Becky says his horoscope predicts that he is on the brink of a significant life change. Adrian tells her about Rachel, and Becky spreads the news via text to Lenny, a junior associate, and Marcus, the firm’s owner. Becky suggests Adrian adopt a dog so he’s not so lonely. Adrian reflects on spending Thanksgiving alone and knows Becky is right. Adrian’s mother and grandmother recently moved to Nebraska because his mother remarried. Adrian doesn’t like Richard, her husband, and he refused their invitation to spend the holidays together.

Lenny apologizes for Adrian’s breakup and invites him to lunch. Marcus enters and asks for updates on Adrian’s caseload. Adrian knows Marcus’s questioning is a veiled attempt to remind him not to let his personal life get in the way of his work. This isn’t a problem since Adrian has always used work as a distraction from the hard things in life. Adrian turns down Marcus’s invitation to spend Christmas with his family. Becky finds Adrian a dog. On his way home, Adrian’s mother calls and begs him to come to Nebraska for Christmas. He won’t come because he can’t forgive Richard. The call goes badly and ends with his mother tearfully suggesting he see a therapist.

At the apartment building, Adrian hears screaming. He finds a woman and two men standing outside Vanessa’s apartment. Vanessa’s sister, Annabel, is demanding that Vanessa let her in. The older man is Vanessa’s father, Gerald, and he accidentally busts her lip trying to force the door open. Vanessa reminds them she has temporary guardianship. Adrian intervenes and uses his legal knowledge to remind them that Vanessa can call the police and have them arrested for assault. The younger man, Brent, Vanessa’s half-brother, makes a snide comment to Adrian, and Gerald accuses Vanessa of “kidnapping” Grace. Annabel is under the influence, and Adrian threatens to call the police, which de-escalates the situation. The three leave. Vanessa thanks him and slams her door.

Becky brings Adrian his new dog, who is 14 years old, incontinent, toothless, and requires three prescription medications daily. Adrian didn’t have in mind the small, elderly dog, but Becky says Harry Puppins is a “lifestyle match” for him since he isn’t in the mood to leave the house.

Chapter 4 Summary: “This Startling Video Will Have You Covering Your Eyes!: Vanessa”

Through her peephole, Vanessa sees Becky bringing Adrian the dog. Drake Lawless, Vanessa’s ex, makes a Skype call to Vanessa. He’s in a tropical location with her former cameraman, Laird. Drake asks how Vanessa is doing, and she tells him about how her sister and father showed up the previous day. Vanessa is trying to get Annabel help for her substance use, but Annabel is currently staying with their father, who isn’t helping the situation. Drake notices Vanessa wearing a brace on her arm and asks if she’s seen a doctor. Vanessa reminds him that she has an inherited condition that will likely kill her at a young age, just as it did every woman in her family, and that seeing a doctor is a waste of time.

Chapter 5 Summary: “Man Rescues Dog But Wait Until You See What It Did to His Apartment!: Adrian”

Adrian knocks on Vanessa’s door to check on her after the incident. She calls him her “hero” and invites him inside for pizza as a thank-you. Adrian notices that Vanessa looks more rested and attractive. He offers to go pick up takeout from her favorite Italian restaurant. When he picks up the food, he gets extra for her to have on hand. Over dinner, Adrian notices how forward Vanessa is. She doesn’t hesitate to share that she and every other woman in the building think he’s hot. She explains she doesn’t date because she has an inherited condition that shortens her life. Adrian asks her to expound, but she doesn’t want to discuss it.

Adrian shares about his recent breakup with Rachel. Vanessa shares how she came to be a YouTube content creator. After her sister, Melanie, died when she was 28, Vanessa decided to quit her job and travel the world at 26. She documented the content, and once the videos went viral, she turned it into a full-time job, naming her channel “Social Butterfly.” Since Annabel left Grace with her after relapsing, she’s been confined to her apartment, caring for the baby. Instead of watching a movie, they watch The Office because Adrian has never seen it.

Adrian doesn’t consider himself adventurous and doesn’t like to fly. Vanessa encourages him to find ways to incorporate more adventure into his daily life. He feeds Grace a bottle while Vanessa finishes dinner, prompting him to reflect on his tumultuous childhood due to his father’s abandonment. Vanessa asks him to stay around and watch a movie since she spends so much time alone. Vanessa gives Adrian a tour of her house, and seeing her bedroom, adjacent to his on the other side of the wall, reminds him of Rachel and all the signs he missed that she was pulling away from him. There is a painting in Vanessa’s bedroom by Sloan Monroe, who is married to Adrian’s cousin, Josh’s best friend, Jason. Vanessa also has a nude sketch of herself, which she commissioned an Italian artist to do before she died.

Adrian is a criminal defense attorney, but Vanessa suggests he consider working for disability rights. Her sister used a wheelchair, and she became aware of all the issues people with disabilities faced with accessibility. She suggests he “could really change the world” (60), using his skills to help the disabled community. They part ways for the night, and later, Vanessa knocks on the wall separating their bedrooms.

Chapters 1-5 Analysis

The alternating narrative structure gives insight into Vanessa’s and Adrian’s internal thoughts, fostering a dual intimacy and establishing the theme of The Transformative Power of Love and Connection. Vanessa’s invitation offers Adrian friendship while helping him release his inner turmoil following his unexpected breakup. The shifting perspective during their meet-cute reveals how each character interprets the events differently. For instance, Adrian’s small acts of kindness appear simple, like helping to calm Grace and taking out Vanessa’s trash. Yet, they feel monumental to Vanessa, who carries invisible burdens. Their encounter is serendipitous, as they both find each other during vulnerable moments and, unable to be alone, form an unlikely friendship. Their first meeting is far from romantic but sets the tone for their relationship as Adrian steps out of his orderly world and enters Vanessa’s chaotic life.

Adrian and Vanessa are neighbors and even share a wall between their bedrooms, establishing the forced proximity trope—a hallmark of the romance genre. This physical closeness forces the two characters, otherwise quite different in lifestyle and personality, to see each other’s everyday realities. The forced proximity also allows them to build trust as Vanessa invites Adrian into her apartment and, thus, into the chaos of her life as a caregiver for her sister’s child. Adrian, seeing Vanessa at her worst, strips away all pretense, making what develops between them feel authentic. Jimenez also establishes an opposites attract dynamic, another genre convention, as Vanessa’s spontaneous nature contrasts with Adrian’s structured demeanor as a lawyer. Initially, Adrian is taken aback by Vanessa’s directness, but it serves as a refreshing counterpoint to his meticulously controlled life as a high-powered attorney. Adrian’s unexpected support in Vanessa’s new role as a caregiver underscores the importance of human connection and the impact of forming bonds during adversity.

Though different in their personalities, Adrian and Vanessa are learning to find Resilience Amid Adversity, another key theme Jimenez explores throughout the narrative. The sudden responsibility of caring for her infant niece forces Vanessa to adapt her free-spirited lifestyle to the demands of guardianship. Vanessa’s reflection that “Nobody was coming to rescue me” emphasizes the newfound challenges she abruptly faces in caring for her niece alone unexpectedly (10). After his breakup, which Adrian refers to as a “sudden gaping black hole in [his] personal life” (23), he wants to retreat into solitude and work. However, this coping mechanism is more avoidance than healing. He develops a friendship with Vanessa, watching her navigate the chaos of single parenting, family trauma, and an uncertain future. This forces Adrian to see that resilience isn’t about avoiding pain but staying open to connection even when it seems risky.

Vanessa’s lifestyle as a travel vlogger is driven by her awareness of her potential genetic predisposition to ALS. This awareness compels her to embrace each day fully, embodying the theme of Living in the Present. Conversely, Adrian struggles with presence because he is constantly preoccupied with control and order, traits amplified by the emotional fallout of his past. He approaches life with a cautious, calculated mindset, believing that by staying logical, he can avoid pain or failure. This makes him hesitant to embrace spontaneity, and he often finds himself stuck in his head rather than embracing the moment. Vanessa’s presence challenges him to embrace life’s messiness, literally and metaphorically. Her unpredictable schedule, health concerns, and the demands of caring for her niece present situations where planning is impossible, and the only option is to respond to what’s right in front of her. Adrian’s decision to accept Vanessa’s invitation to stay for dinner and a movie reveals more than a growing attraction to her. It’s a step toward letting go of his rigid routines and emotional defenses and allowing himself to lean into connection and spontaneity.

Jimenez also creates chapter titles to align with Vanessa’s career as a content creator. Each chapter title is styled like a clickbait YouTube video title. Chapter 1 focuses on the “shocking” nature of what Adrian found in Vanessa’s apartment—something that would motivate a potential viewer to click on it, as they think something surprising with occur. However, once inside, Adrian realizes it is Vanessa caring for a baby alone, exhausted and exasperated because nothing she tries to soothe Grace works. In reality, this reflects a common occurrence for caregivers of young children, especially a person caring for an infant alone, and further solidifies Resilience Amid Adversity. In Chapter 2, Vanessa intentionally titles the video “Hot Guy Tames My Baby” (13), which she knows will attract her viewers’ attention. Jimenez titles that chapter the same thing, which aligns her stylistic choice with Vanessa’s public-facing YouTube presence. Chapter 3’s title would motivate someone to watch a cheating partner caught in their infidelity. In reality, the chapter’s content focuses on the difficulties Adrian faces in the wake of his breakup.

Further, Chapter 4 uses a humorous, clickbait-style title to describe a traumatic situation from Vanessa’s previous day: Annabel and Vanessa’s father attempting to take Grace from her with force. Similarly, Chapter 5 uses a clickbait title, which suggests a situation where Adrian’s rescue dog creates a mess in his apartment. In actuality, the chapter’s focus is on Adrian and Vanessa spending more time together and getting to know one another. These clickbait-style titles not only connect to Vanessa’s career but also contrast online audiences’ sensational expectations with the daily reality and emotionally complex realities of the characters’ lives. This stylistic choice underscores the tension between appearance and reality, mirroring Vanessa’s life as both a content creator and a struggling new caregiver and Adrian’s internal conflicts. Additionally, Jimenez’s approach creates intrigue (just as a clickbait video title does), as the title is the first thing the reader sees before diving into the chapter’s plot developments.
