Character Analysis

Adrian Copeland

Content Warning: This section of the guide includes discussion of illness, death, substance use, and mental illness.

Adrian Copeland, the main male character, is an accomplished lawyer and represents the antithesis of spontaneity, thriving on predictability and meticulous planning. He is emotionally guarded and disconnected from everyday life. His breakup has made him wary of emotional risk, and his father’s abandonment manifests as an obsession with control and a reluctance to form attachments. He struggles to change despite recognizing his tendency toward overprotection, as he admits, “I did miss feeling like I had a purpose” (22). His professional success, based on anticipating problems and creating safeguards, reinforces his belief that control equals safety.

When Vanessa enters Adrian’s carefully constructed world, he faces its ultimate challenge. As he becomes involved in Vanessa’s chaotic, spontaneous, and emotionally rich life, first through proximity and then by choice, Adrian is gradually pulled out of his comfort zone. She says, “You are the kind of man who can’t see the shapes in the clouds. And it’s not because you lack imagination. It’s because you’re too busy to look up” (108). Vanessa lives by a carpe diem philosophy that challenges Adrian’s controlled worldview. Their relationship thrives because Vanessa embodies everything Adrian has spent his life avoiding: unpredictability, vulnerability, and emotional rawness. By being with Vanessa, Adrian is confronted with situations that strip away his defenses. He faces his anxiety disorder head-on and repairs his strained relationship with his father. However, his greatest challenge is accepting Vanessa’s refusal to seek medical care to see if she has ALS and access treatment, if so. These moments break him open, forcing him to feel rather than fix.

Adrian is a round, dynamic character who changes throughout the text. Adrian’s character growth stems from embracing discomfort instead of retreating to safety. Despite a feeling that he should avoid Vanessa due to her potential diagnosis, he opts for connection over self-protection. He is supportive and understanding, doesn’t treat Vanessa like she’s fragile, and loves her for who she is, despite her complicated family dynamics. Adrian realizes that letting go of control and accepting uncertainty isn’t safe but can be fulfilling. By the novel’s end, he shows growth in supporting Vanessa without overriding her autonomy, indicating that his love has shifted from protection to true partnership. His journey reflects that love isn’t about solving Vanessa’s problems but rather being present through uncertainty and pain.

Vanessa Price

Vanessa Price is the adventurous, spontaneous main female character. She is a round, dynamic character. She is constantly on the move, inspired by her popular travel vlog and a mission to live life to the fullest. Adrian says, “She had this bottomless-energy thing about her. Something perky and shiny, the thing news anchors pretend to have on air” (53). Yet, beneath her vibrant exterior lies a woman haunted by loss and a looming fear of mortality. Vanessa’s life is ruled by ALS, which took the lives of her female family members at a young age, and Vanessa believes she may be next. This belief fuels her resistance to long-term plans and romantic attachment, as well as confirming whether she has the disease. Her fierce independence is empowering and isolating as she embraces life while shielding herself from future pain. She is most vulnerable and honest with her thousands of YouTube followers, where she documents her journey and raises awareness and funds for ALS. Despite her circumstances, Vanessa exemplifies Resilience Amid Adversity. She faces her challenges head-on and often turns the focus away from her assumed illness, seeking joy in the small moments of life, and lives with a “now or never” mentality.

Haunted by the fear of dying before 30, Vanessa avoids deep connections and long-term plans. Traveling the world and keeping relationships light protects her from heartbreak. When her half-sister leaves her baby daughter with her, Vanessa must adopt a slower, rooted life, leading her to meet Adrian. He supports Vanessa as she cares for her father, brother, sister, and Grace. Loving deeply feels risky, but the closer she gets to him, the more Adrian challenges her outlook. While Vanessa is impulsive, Adrian is steady and thoughtful. He enters her life as a consistent presence. Adrian brings her the safety and stability she never knew she could have through his unwavering support. With him and the baby, Vanessa faces the idea that love is worth the risk, despite an uncertain future.

Gerald Price

Gerald Price is Vanessa’s father and represents a complicated part of her past and present struggle. Since her mother’s and sister’s deaths, Vanessa’s father’s grief has manifested in hoarding. Gerald’s hoarding impacts Vanessa’s life as it creates a strained father-daughter relationship and causes Vanessa anxiety as she fears for her father’s safety and that he will lose his home. Gerald’s hoarding stems from his clinging to the past and unresolved emotions. Growing up with a father consumed by hoarding contributed to Vanessa’s intense need for freedom. Vanessa, in contrast, lives with the constant fear that her life will be short, which drives her to value experiences over possessions. Where Gerald’s hoarding creates physical and emotional clutter, Vanessa pursues minimalism and mobility to avoid being trapped by possessions.

Gerald’s cluttered, filthy house presents as neglect and abandonment, yet his character reveals a deep love for his children. Vanessa says, “Dad, even with all his faults, had kept us together after Mom’s death. We’d lost her, but we never lost each other” (308). The clutter symbolizes the emotional turmoil he never processed, and Vanessa carries that mess with her long after she leaves his home. Vanessa visits Gerald’s home and confronts the literal and symbolic weight of his hoarding. It’s a turning point, as she sees not just the damage it caused her, but the pain it masks in him, saying, “It wasn’t easy living through the things he did. I think enough tragedy can unravel anyone” (187). Instead of judging him, the moment pushes her toward compassion for her father and herself. She reaches out for help, knowing Gerald’s issues won’t be fixed just by cleaning the house. With Sonja’s intervention, Gerald deals with the underlying issues around his hoarding, gets a stable job, and moves toward a place of physical and emotional health. Gerald’s healing, in turn, allows for healing in his relationship with Vanessa and enables him to be a presence in Grace’s life. Gerald is a round, dynamic character.

Grace

Although Grace is only an infant, she is a significant presence in the story. She is a flat, static character who does not change throughout the text. She faces the negative impact of Annabel’s life choices due to addiction. Additionally, she presents a physical and emotional struggle for Vanessa as she makes her end-of-life plans and worries about Grace’s future. Annabel’s substance use, absenteeism, and general instability leave Grace without a stable home or primary caregiver, highlighting how her daughter is the innocent bearer of choices she had no control over. Grace’s needs are immediate and demanding, but they also quietly reflect deeper emotional voids left in the wake of parental neglect. In shouldering that responsibility, Vanessa confronts Annabel’s failures and insecurities about what she can realistically offer a child. Believing her time is short, Vanessa has long avoided commitments and dependents, preferring a lifestyle that leaves no one behind should she become sick. However, Grace forces her to rethink this strategy. Suddenly, Vanessa is not just planning for her future or lack thereof; she must also consider Grace’s.

Vanessa’s relationship with Grace quickly evolves from temporary guardianship to love. She reflects, “She was more mine than she ever was Annabel’s. She’d always be mine” (322). Grace is not just a responsibility but also a reason for Vanessa to live with greater intention. Grace demands routine and stability, things Vanessa had given up when she quit her job and began traveling the world. By rising to the occasion, Vanessa proves to herself that she is needed more than she realized. Grace’s infant’s demands ironically lead to Adrian and Vanessa’s meet-cute. Adrian steps into her life with a natural ease, instinctive tenderness, and protectiveness that reveals much about his character and helps soften Vanessa’s guarded heart. His involvement extends beyond being a good neighbor, as he becomes a consistent and loving presence in Grace’s life, providing the stability and affection she and Vanessa need. Adrian’s devotion to Grace is also key in gaining Vanessa’s trust. His relationship with Grace demonstrates he is ready for love, even in the uncertain future.
