A coming-of-age quest narrative, the story explores Forging a New Identity Amid Adversity, Courage as a Conscious Choice, and The Power of Sacrificial Love.

Plot Summary

The Igiby family—siblings Janner, Tink, and Leeli; their mother Nia; and their grandfather Podo Helmer—are now on the run. They are secretly the royal family of the now-destroyed Isle of Anniera, which recently fell to the monstrous Fangs of Dang—a lizard-like people who enjoy kidnapping, torturing, and killing children. Now fugitives in the aftermath of the events described in the series’ first installment, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, the family members are hiding in the forest home of their uncle, Artham P. Wingfeather, as the story opens. Artham also adopts a different persona and is known as Peet the Sock Man because he wears socks over the claws that he has in place of hands. (In the novel, he is referred to as both Peet and Artham in different moments.) He is the older brother and former Throne Warden of the siblings’ late father, Esben, who died in the Great War against the Fangs while his wife and children escaped by boat.

Now, Nia’s father Podo, who is a fierce ex-pirate with a mysterious past, conducts daily drills to maintain the family’s vigilance against external threats. Janner, the eldest son, is not the heir apparent to the family’s lost throne; instead, he grapples with the responsibility of being the Throne Warden and protecting his younger brother Tink, who is now the exiled High King of Anniera. One day, their mother Nia decides that the family must travel north to the Ice Prairies to escape the Fangs of Dang. Podo argues for sailing home to Anniera or to the Green Hollows, but Nia insists on the northern route, and Artham agrees to guide them.

In the nearby town of Glipwood, several Fangs interrogate two innkeepers, Joe and Addie Shooster, asking questions about the Igibys. Joe is secretly sheltering Oskar N. Reteep, the local bookseller, who was gravely wounded in an attack that took place in the previous novel. Oskar’s employee, Zouzab, betrays the Igibys’ location to the Fangs. Oskar overhears the Fangs discussing this information and realizes that an attack on the family is imminent.

After witnessing Fangs capture the Shoosters in a sinister Black Carriage, the wounded Oskar escapes on a donkey to warn the Igiby family. His arrival forces them to abandon their plans and flee north as the Fang army closes in. Artham engages a pursuing foe in the trees, buying the family time. As the rest are driven into a deep gully, the gully floor collapses, plunging Janner, Tink, Leeli, Podo, and their dog Nugget into a gargan rockroach’s den.

Trapped in the den with other dazed but dangerous creatures, the family fights for an escape route. After a frantic struggle, Janner and Podo escape the den just as the rockroach erupts from the ground, attacking the Fang army and creating a diversion that allows the family to flee toward the Mighty Blapp River.

The family reaches the impassable rapids with the Fangs still in pursuit. Oskar recalls the legend of Miller’s Bridge at the nearby Fingap Falls, and they head that way. Despite Podo’s unexplained fear of the sea, Leeli feels a strange pull toward it, and as they head for the falls, they arrive to find no visible bridge. They believe they are trapped, but Tink notices a hidden staircase carved into the cliff face. They descend and cross a series of narrow stone bridges, Miller’s Bridge. Podo dispatches a pursuing troll, but the impact damages the structure. As a second troll follows, Nugget attacks it, causing the bridge to collapse. Both Nugget and the troll fall to their deaths in the sea below.

Grieving for Nugget, the family reaches the river’s north bank. Leeli plays a mournful song on her whistleharp, which magically summons sea dragons from the Dark Sea. The music also induces a vision in Janner and Tink, who see the dragons carrying Nugget’s body to a heroic resting place called Yurgen’s crypt. An ancient gray dragon speaks into Janner’s mind, warning him to beware a dangerous man who has sailed across the sea. Janner assumes that the warning refers to Gnag the Nameless, but Podo dismisses the sea dragon’s words entirely.

The family travels north toward the city of Dugtown, intending to find Oskar’s ally, Ronchy McHiggins. Podo warns them of the Stranders, dangerous outcasts living along the river. One night, they are captured by Strander children, who are led by a girl named Maraly. In the Stranders’ camp, the leader, Claxton Weaver, confronts them. To save the family, Podo reveals his own past as a Strander. When Claxton remains unconvinced, Tink daringly pickpockets Claxton’s dagger and his “pone,” a token of leadership. After Claxton strikes him, Tink throws the stolen dagger, knocking Claxton unconscious. The Stranders, now led by Claxton’s mother Nurgabog, hail Tink as their new, temporary leader. Nurgabog warns them of approaching Fangs, so the family flees toward Dugtown. They enter Dugtown through a secret tunnel system and hide in a burrow. While waiting, Oskar and Nia begin translating the “First Book,” an ancient tome in Janner’s possession, which chronicles the history of the ancient kingdom of Anyara.

Podo and Oskar navigate the tunnels to meet Ronchy McHiggins, a tavern owner who arranges for a guide named Migg Landers. That night, as the family meets Landers in an alley, a mysterious hero called the Florid Sword kills two Fangs nearby. Landers then betrays the family to a waiting group of Fangs. The Igibys fight their way into Ronchy’s tavern, where the Florid Sword creates a diversion, allowing Podo, Nia, Leeli, and Oskar to escape. Janner and Tink remain trapped inside and are separated from the others. Podo shouts for them to meet back at the burrow.

The next morning, Ronchy finds the boys and gives them directions. In the chaotic streets, Janner and Tink argue. Tink, overwhelmed by his royal duties, runs off alone. Janner takes a wrong turn and is captured by hags and traded to a man called the Overseer. He is imprisoned and taken to the Fork Factory, a weapons plant using child labor, where he meets Sara Cobbler, a girl taken by the Black Carriage years ago. After a failed escape, Janner is locked in a small, dark box for two days. He later stages a second escape, but he is caught, whipped, and sentenced to three days of confinement.

Meanwhile, Artham is taken to a fortress on the Phoob Islands, where he witnesses prisoners being transformed into “Grey Fangs,” wolf-like creatures who can withstand the cold. Despairing, he agrees to undergo the transformation himself, but when an imprisoned Tink arrives in the Black Carriage, Artham changes his mind.

Janner has a vision of his family safe in the mountains but sees Tink imprisoned by Stranders. He escapes the factory in the Overseer’s carriage and reaches the burrow, where he finds a wounded Nurgabog. She informs him that his family has gone to the Ice Prairies and that Claxton Weaver captured Tink and gave him to the Black Carriage. Janner sets out to rescue his brother but learns that he is too late. He frees Maraly from a cage at the Strander camp, and they escape north together.

Janner and Maraly cross the Barrier and enter the Stony Mountains. They are found by Gammon, the leader of the Skreean rebellion, and he guides them toward his hidden city of Kimera. After a snickbuzzard attack, they descend onto the Ice Prairies, and Janner is reunited with his family in Kimera.

In the Phoob fortress, the sight of Tink about to be transformed causes Artham to break free of his physical and mental bonds. He emerges from captivity with large wings and a clear mind, then rescues Tink, who has been transformed into a small, feral Grey Fang. He takes Tink and flies toward Kimera, spotting the Grey Fang army marching across the plains.

In Kimera, Gammon reveals that he has betrayed the Igibys and plans to trade them to the Grey Fangs in exchange for Skree’s freedom. The family is brought before the army, but Gammon’s betrayal is itself a ruse. Gammon, revealing himself as the Florid Sword, signals an ambush, and the Battle of Kimera begins.

Meanwhile, the family takes a sled down a secret ice tunnel to a waiting ship. As they reach open water, they are confronted by enraged sea dragons. Podo is revealed to be “Scale Raker,” a former dragon hunter. Just then, Artham arrives with the transformed Tink. Leeli, as the Song Maiden, calms the dragons with her music. They grant Podo one final, safe passage across the sea but forbid him from ever returning to their waters after that. A feral Tink awakens and leaps overboard. Janner dives in to save him, and Artham rescues them both. Aboard the ship, Janner recovers while telling stories of their past to the hostile Tink. One morning, Tink’s memory and identity return, and his wolf-like eyes turn blue again.
