Joey is hurt—Tony is the only true father figure he has known, but he knows Tony’s disappointment is warranted. Tony asks Joey to prove him wrong, and Joey promises he won’t leave Aoife or their child.

Afterward, Joey goes to his parents’ graves and then to a welcome home party at the Kavanaghs’ house. His grandmother gives him a letter from his late grandfather, and the Kavanaghs show Joey a small house they built in their backyard for Joey and Aoife’s new family. As he tries to get back to Aoife, a nurse passes Joey his new son, and he is immediately in love. He is ushered out of the operating room alone and tells Trish what is happening on the phone. Trish and Joey feel terrified that Aoife is in the room alone.

Later, Joey talks to Trish and Tony about what will happen next, telling them that he needs his family to be together. He says he plans to spend some of the money his grandfather gave him to pay for Aoife’s tuition to Tommen, so they can be together for their last year of school. Surprisingly, Trish thinks Aoife and AJ should stay with them, but Tony knows it is Aoife’s decision.

Joey can’t sleep that night, still thinking about his mother. When Aoife wakes up, she tells him she is proud of him. Aoife tells him that he has one last chance with her because she can’t risk the baby’s safety, and Joey says that is the only chance he needs.

She sees that it is snowing and Johnny, Tadhg, and Gibsie are having a snowball fight. Shannon is still happy in her relationship with Johnny, and happy that her family is together and safe.

Parts 11-12 Analysis

The Power of Unconditional Love is a major theme that runs throughout Redeeming 6, and it is especially important as Aoife and Joey start their new lives as parents. Unconditional love is the reason Aoife wants to stay with Joey regardless of how his recovery affects their family, while it is love for Aoife and the baby that gives Joey the courage to go to rehab and enter recovery. When Tony confronts Joey about standing by Aoife after the baby is delivered, Joey knows he won’t run away because his love for her is unconditional and won’t change. The narrative also makes it clear that Joey’s love for AJ is unconditional, even before he meets the baby, but it is also shown in all the ways he puts AJ’s well-being before his own in these chapters. Unconditional love ultimately causes Joey to put his family first, taking some of the metaphorical weight Aoife has carried for the last nine months off her shoulders and prioritizing her recovery. Joey’s actions as a new parent show just how much his unconditional love for Aoife has become a part of the foundation of their relationship.

These final parts of the novel also emphasize the importance of accepting help, which is hard for both main characters, but especially for Joey. Due to his upbringing and The Impact of Childhood Trauma, Joey finds it hard to understand why anyone would want to help him at all. However, as he begins to understand that love can be unconditional and he deserves this love, he begins to accept the help that comes with it. This is especially true in his relationship with Edel, who starts to love him like a son early in their relationship. Joey wants to repay her for everything she and her family have done for him and his siblings, but the only payment Edel will accept is Joey’s wellness, emphasizing the truly unconditional nature of her love and the depth of their connection.

As new parents, Joey and Aoife must lean on each other, and Joey can offer Aoife support, just as she has supported him in the past. In Chapter 139, Joey helps Aoife shower, accepting her new self and body as they are, even though she doesn’t want him to see how she’s changed. Later scenes, like when Joey takes AJ to feed so Aoife can rest, show this as well. To give Aoife and AJ a better life, Joey also has to accept the help of the Kavanaghs and his grandparents for material things he cannot provide on his own. However, though Joey and Aoife accept the help of the Molloys, they also question whether there are limits to the help they can accept. They ultimately decide they cannot keep living with the Molloys and must start a household of their own, showing how they manage to find a balance between leaning on others and being self-sufficient. In doing so, Joey in particular trusts his instincts to give Aoife and AJ the best life they can have together as a family.

These final chapters also emphasize the challenges of new parenthood, starting with AJ’s difficult birth. Joey worries for her while she is in labor, but especially afterward when he is not allowed to see her. Aoife has great difficulty breastfeeding AJ and what Trish calls the “baby blues,” which others think might be postpartum depression. There are also practical challenges as they learn to arrange their new schools and schedules. However, the last chapter and Epilogue of the novel point to a brighter future. These chapters emphasize how Joey and Aoife are better when they are together, and their new living situation and school allow them the time together that they needed before.
