Aoife gets Johnny to leave the house, and he promises that he will fix everything. Parts 7-8 Analysis

The theme of Addiction and the Road to Recovery is especially prominent in Parts 7 and 8, as Joey’s addiction becomes more of an issue in his life. Afraid of losing him after she has learned how serious his childhood abuse was, Aoife doesn’t try as hard as she once did to help Joey stop using. However, as she turns a blind eye to Joey’s addiction, she also becomes more aware of how his heroin use could impact her and their baby. When a nurse asks her about Joey’s intravenous drug use and she has to do further testing, Aoife feels uncomfortable about how she is being treated and questioned because of him. Trish has to reassure her that the medical professionals questioning her are only asking for the safety of the baby, not as a reason to take the baby from them once it is born, but the situation brings the hard reality of her situation home to Aoife. She begins taking their sex life more seriously, using a condom for the first time in their relationship after she learns how STIs can be contracted through intravenous drug use. Aoife also hates the way others, even her parents, view her and her relationship with Joey once they learn of the extent of his addiction. Meanwhile, Aoife describes Joey as a “functioning drug addict,” saying, “It didn’t seem to matter what Joey took or how high he got, he continued to present himself and function at a level that kept everything ticking over. If it wasn’t so soul-crushingly depressing, it would be impressive” (584). In this section, Aoife begins to lose trust in Joey and consequently, her own judgment, complicating the novel’s portrayal of The Power of Unconditional Love. She knows what she is doing is bad for him, her, and their baby, but she can’t seem to stop it, not unlike how Joey can’t seem to stop using drugs. In this way, Walsh portrays Aoife as being addicted to Joey, showing how both must overcome their addictions to have a healthy relationship and a good family for their baby.

This section of the book also continues the novel’s exploration of family through the introduction of the Kavanaghs. The Molloys and the Lynches are less present in this section but still fill the same roles in the novel and Joey and Aoife’s lives. Yet the new family of the Kavanaghs shifts the overall dynamic in the novel. Joey doesn’t trust the Kavanaghs at first because they are too nice and don’t want anything from him, highlighting The Impact of Childhood Trauma. After experiencing what he has from this family, Joey doubts the kindness they show, believing they must have an ulterior motive, reflecting the fact that when his mother is nice to him, she wants either money or forgiveness. For this reason, Joey is especially wary of Edel and doesn’t want her kindness at first, taking advantage of her by using her to get medication when she offers him breakfast. He profusely apologizes when the Kavanaghs have to watch his younger siblings, feeling embarrassed about the life they live and not wanting them involved, as Edel, John, and Johnny don’t know the truth about their parents. Overall, Joey does not know what to make of the Kavanaghs due to his own family life, yet Walsh lays the groundwork in this section for Joey to start questioning these preconceived notions about family later in the novel.
