Chapter 11 Summary

When Juliette enters the building, she cannot believe her eyes. There are chandeliers and Persian rugs and heating, but when she looks at this luxurious interior, all she can see is the blood of many people who must have died to sustain this lifestyle. She remembers many promises that The Reestablishment made, promises of a better future and of getting the old world back, “the world with movie dates and spring weddings and baby showers”(63). But now she sees how instead of giving people the life they wanted, they stole everything from them, and this place is proof of how corrupt they are.

Juliette is so overwhelmed that she begins to cry and falls to her knees. Struggling even to breathe, Juliette feels Adam lifting her and carrying her in his arms. For a moment, she wants to forget that he is “working for the same people who are trying to destroy the very little that's left of humanity” (64) and that she is supposed to hate him. She wishes she could touch his skin, that “there were no barriers between [them]” (64).

They arrive at a door and Adam, having unlocked it with a key card, steps inside. It is a beautifully decorated room with a big bed and a lush carpet.
