The Art of Racing in the Rain

Enzo recalls the famous racer Luigi Chinetti, who brought Ferrari to the United States. He also offers praise for endurance racers who have the strength and will to keep excelling. He wonders if a child somewhere in the world inherited Chinetti’s soul, and the experiences and skills that came with it. 

One year later, Denny and Zoe are racing each other in go karts. She instinctively anticipates his driving and doesn’t let him pass. Enzo contemplates that Denny sustains himself on the knowledge that Zoe is quicker, better, and smarter than him. 

Denny runs out of money to pay his lawyer’s fees. Mark gives him 30 days to figure out his finances.

Mark Fein encourages Denny to give up the custody battle and let Zoe stay with the Twins. The criminal trial will most likely disappear once Denny surrenders. Denny struggles with the dual responsibilities of racing and supporting his daughter. He sells the house and moves into a one-bedroom apartment. Enzo acclimates to the new environment. 

Mark receives an appointment to become a circuit judge, and Denny needs a new lawyer. He receives Mr. Lawrence, who lacks Mark’s energy or enthusiasm.

The Twins sue for child support, and Enzo imagines karma as a living presence that sends them bad dreams as revenge. 

Winter arrives, and Enzo is exhausted from life. He absentmindedly crosses the street without looking, and gets clipped by a car. The driver takes Enzo and Denny to the animal hospital. 

Enzo thinks of Ayrton Senna, a driver who perished on a track under questionable circumstances. He comes to the conclusion that, if his time was truly finished, Enzo would have died under the wheel of the car. He has business left undone with Denny. 

Drugged and loopy, Enzo isn’t able to decipher all of the medical information relating to his condition. He’s coherent enough to realize that Denny has run out of money to pay the vet. Denny gives up emotionally, and he’s ready to give up. Enzo’s faith in Denny is unshaken. He’s only frustrated that he cannot help.
