Heron receives a terminal diagnosis just as his adult daughter Maggie begins to sense that her father has concealed a significant truth about her childhood. Forty years earlier, his wife Dawn had fallen in love with a woman named Hazel, forcing a reckoning with her identity and her marriage. After Dawn confessed the relationship, she was locked out of the family home and subjected to a legal system that branded her an unfit mother solely for being a lesbian. Dawn lost all custody of her young daughter Maggie and eventually left the family home for good. Decades later, Maggie uncovers the legal documents that expose her father's lies, confronts him directly, and then tracks down her mother. The novel closes with Maggie finally meeting Dawn and the two women beginning the slow, honest work of rebuilding what was lost.

While the main plot moves toward revelation and confrontation, the novel pays careful attention to the unremarkable rhythms of everyday life for each character. Heron deals with his diagnosis in characteristically avoidant ways — climbing into a supermarket freezer, calling Maggie every night without mentioning his illness, and throwing himself into gym sessions and gardening. Maggie's life in 2022 is equally ordinary on the surface: park bench lunches, date nights with Conor, and ferrying Tom to his grandfather's house. Meanwhile, in 1982, the small domestic details of Dawn's life — collecting Maggie from playgroup, keeping the affair secret — give way to the formal machinery of divorce and the courts. These secondary events build the atmosphere of normalcy that makes the novel's emotional ruptures all the more striking. Together they show that the hidden complexities of these seemingly ordinary lives are always pressing just beneath the surface.

Beneath the surface of everyday family life, a series of pivotal moments drives both storylines toward their emotional climax. In 1982, the deepening bond between Dawn and Hazel, a second explosive fight with Heron, and a catastrophic courtroom decision all push Dawn toward the loss of her daughter. In 2022, Maggie's growing unease is fed by Conor's persistent urging to confront the past and by the memory of Heron's childhood instruction to lie about where her mother had gone. When Maggie finally tells her children their grandfather is ill and then faces Heron himself on his doorstep, she begins to grasp the full depth of what has been hidden from her throughout her life. She overcomes her own avoidance — a trait she shares with Heron — and tracks down Dawn, where the conversation she has long needed finally takes place. The pool ends with Maggie in her mother's spare room, feeling, for the first time, entirely whole.

The key decisions and discoveries that crack open the family's long-kept secrets.
