Father Hart, an elderly Catholic priest, travels from Yorkshire to London to bring news of a killing to Scotland Yard.

Superintendent Webberly assigns Inspector Lynley and reinstates Sergeant Havers to investigate a decapitation murder in Yorkshire.

Lynley, Havers, and Father Hart examine photographs of farmer William Teys beheaded in his barn, with his daughter Roberta having confessed.

Lynley and Havers travel north to Yorkshire, where Superintendent Nies meets them and warns them not to overstep their authority.

Roberta Teys is found committed to Barnstingham Mental Asylum without proper paperwork, unable or unwilling to speak.

Lynley and Havers examine the Teys barn and determine the family dog was killed before William, strongly suggesting premeditation.

Lynley and Havers visit Olivia Odell, who reveals that William had been spending frequent time with her young daughter Bridie.

Lynley and Havers drive to York and locate Tessa Mowrey, William's long-absent first wife, living calmly under a new name.

Tessa admits she abandoned her family shortly after Roberta's birth, secretly remarried, and never saw William or her daughters again.

Forensic examiner St. James finds the Teys dog was drugged with the same class of barbiturates discovered in William's own blood.

St. James analyzes the blood pattern on Roberta's dress and confirms she was kneeling in the barn during the killing.

Havers searches Roberta's room and finds drawers lined with classified ads containing a coded personal message and a charity listing.

Havers confronts Gillian at Testament House in London, shows her an old photograph, and triggers a severe emotional breakdown.

In a supervised hospital session, Gillian describes how their father sexually abused her under the guise of prayer and religious practice.

Roberta finally speaks and reveals she drugged the dog, killed her father with an axe, and acted to protect Bridie from abuse.

Father Hart brings news of a Yorkshire beheading to Scotland Yard, prompting Lynley and Havers to travel north and investigate the killing of farmer William Teys. At the crime scene and in the community, they uncover evidence of premeditation and locate Tessa Mowrey, William's long-absent wife, living quietly under a new name in York. Forensic expert St. James confirms the drugged dog and analyzes Roberta's dress, placing her at the scene whether as killer or witness. Havers decodes a hidden message in Roberta's bedroom and tracks the missing elder daughter Gillian to a London refuge for runaways. When Gillian is brought back to face her sister, the truth about years of sexual abuse finally emerges, and Roberta breaks her long silence to explain that she killed her father to protect another child.

The core murder investigation from Yorkshire beheading to Roberta's confession.

Superintendents Webberly and Hillier discuss a series of Railway Ripper killings and a feuding Yorkshire police partnership requiring outside intervention.

Havers collects Lynley from St. James's wedding in Chelsea and is introduced to the new bride Deborah and to Lady Helen Clyde.

Havers returns to her parents' cluttered home in Acton and reflects on her dead brother Tony and her parents' retreat into fantasy.

An American couple staying at Keldale Hall tells the honeymooning St. Jameses about a newborn found dead in the nearby abbey ruins.

Lynley learns from lodge-keeper Stepha that William burned all of Gillian's belongings and declared her dead to him after she fled.

William's nephew Richard Gibson claims Gillian was sexually precocious from age twelve and that her behavior drove him to leave Keldale.

Superintendent Nies delivers a box of evidence containing a blood-stained dress but deliberately withholds all laboratory analyses from Lynley and Havers.

Father Hart shows Lynley and Deborah the churchyard grave of the dead infant, which bears a Shakespearean epitaph reading 'As Flame to Smoke.'

Constable Langston admits he secretly buried the Teys dog Whiskers himself rather than allow the animal to be cremated by authorities.

Stepha visits Lynley's room at the lodge and they sleep together, while Havers lies awake in the adjoining room listening.

Havers attacks Lynley in a furious confrontation over his cigarette case inscription; he threatens to have her removed from the case.

Lady Helen Clyde arrives at Jonah and Gillian's Islington flat and uses gentle persuasion to convince the frightened Gillian to travel north.

Lynley searches the text of the Shakespeare play to decode what the infant's gravestone epitaph reveals about Father Hart's knowledge.

A message from London confirms that Tessa's missing husband Russell Mowrey was killed by the Railway Ripper, entirely unrelated to the Keldale case.

Lynley and Havers drive Gillian to York, where Tessa Mowrey runs from her front door to meet the daughter she once abandoned.

The investigation runs alongside parallel stories that illuminate the world in which the murder occurred. Havers and Lynley come from opposite ends of British society, and their mismatched partnership is established from the moment they meet at St. James's wedding. Obstructions from the local police force and missing forensic evidence slow progress, while gossip from American tourists and secrets kept by local residents gradually fill in the picture. The mystery of the dead infant in the abbey ruins, William's erasure of Gillian's existence, and Richard Gibson's suspicious account of Gillian's youth all add layers to the case. Lady Helen's timely intervention in London turns the investigation around, and the revelation that Tessa's missing husband died at the hands of the Railway Ripper closes off a loose thread, leaving Lynley free to drive Gillian north for a long-delayed reunion with her mother.

Supporting discoveries, relationships, and parallel storylines surrounding the main investigation.

Havers arrives at Lynley's Belgravia townhouse to review the case notes and privately resolves to prove herself worthy of returning to CID.

Deborah and newly married St. James confess to each other their shared fear about how their relationship has changed since the wedding.

On the train north, Havers flags that sedatives were found in William's blood, noting it is unusual for a working farmer.

Lynley tells Havers that Superintendent Nies once arrested him for his brother-in-law's murder before releasing him several days later.

Havers steps back as if struck when she finds a candlelit shrine to the absent Tessa dominating an entire corner of the Teys sitting room.

During their first visit to Barnstingham Asylum, Roberta remains completely silent until Lynley mentions the possibility of finding her missing sister Gillian.

Lynley steps into Nigel Parrish's cottage and hears the organist redirect suspicion toward the painter Ezra Farmington and his wandering habits.

Deborah confesses to St. James that marrying him has hurt Lynley; Simon urges her to focus on the present rather than the past.

Deborah meets Lynley in the churchyard and urges him to let her go, saying Simon conceals his injury's pain to protect her.

Havers learns that Deborah grew up as the daughter of St. James's family servant, realizing class was what prevented Lynley from pursuing her.

Gillian cries from behind a locked bathroom door that she once left something for Roberta to use as protection against their father.

Returning late to the lodge, Lynley opens Stepha's door and finds her in bed with William's nephew Richard Gibson.

Havers flees to the hospital bathroom and tells Lynley, for the first time, about her brother Tony's death and her enduring guilt.

Father Hart admits in the confessional that he knew of William's abuse and the dead infant in the abbey but failed to act.

Lynley accepts that Deborah loves her husband and resolves, grateful for Lady Helen's loyalty, to build a different life alongside her.

From the moment Havers resolves to prove herself at Lynley's Belgravia home, the investigation becomes as much about the investigators as the crime. Clues like barbiturates in a farmer's blood and a shrine to an absent wife hint at hidden patterns of control, while Lynley's tangled feelings for Deborah and his guilt over St. James's injury quietly shape his behavior. The visit to Barnstingham Asylum reveals that Roberta is reachable, and conversations at the graveyard and the cottage chip away at the community's carefully maintained surface. Gillian's desperate cry from a locked London bathroom and Lynley's discovery of Stepha in bed with Richard each shift the emotional ground of the story. In the final reckoning, Havers confronts her long-buried grief over Tony, Father Hart admits his silence, and Lynley resolves to stop punishing himself by accepting the future that Lady Helen represents.

The character revelations and emotional shifts that reshape the investigators and the investigation.
