Birkin arrives alone at the Oxgodby train station in the rain with no one there to greet him.

Birkin examines the church's whitewashed wall and concludes the hidden mural must depict the Last Judgment.

Reverend Keach explains the two conditions of Adelaide Hebron's bequest: restore the mural and find a buried ancestor.

Birkin meets Charles Moon, a cheerful fellow veteran hired to excavate for the remains of an excommunicated ancestor.

Birkin uncovers the first major figure from the mural: an imposing, judgmental Christ at the painting's apex.

Alice Keach wakes a sleeping Birkin from a nap outside the church, and he is immediately captivated by her.

Alice arrives at the church on Birkin's last day carrying a farewell basket of fresh apples.

Birkin receives a letter from his estranged wife asking him home, then departs Oxgodby for the train station.

Thomas Birkin, a war-scarred veteran of World War One, arrives alone in the remote Yorkshire town of Oxgodby to restore a medieval church mural buried under centuries of whitewash. He meets fellow veteran Charles Moon and begins the painstaking work of uncovering what slowly reveals itself as a masterpiece of medieval art. As the summer unfolds, Birkin is drawn into the lives of the townspeople, particularly the beautiful and unavailable Alice Keach, and confronts his buried memories of the siege of Passchendaele. A shattering discovery about the mural's forgotten artist arrives alongside the death of a young girl and the revelation of Moon's painful past. Birkin ultimately chooses not to act on his feelings for Alice, and a letter from his estranged wife calls him back to London. He departs Oxgodby no longer a casualty, prepared to re-engage with his life.

The core story of a damaged veteran restoring a mural and himself.

Birkin insists on living in the church bell tower despite Reverend Keach's objections about the heating expense.

On his first morning in Oxgodby, Birkin surveys a vast and magnificent Yorkshire landscape from the bell tower window.

Moon and Birkin share morning tea over their first full day, and Moon jokes cheerfully that both are survivors.

Kathy Ellerbeck visits Birkin in the church for the first time, calls him an artist, and brings food from her mother.

Kathy brings a gramophone to the church and plays sacred hymns, including 'The Lost Chord,' while Birkin works.

Birkin attends Sunday dinner at the Ellerbecks and becomes transfixed by the intricate design of the hanging oil lamp.

Kathy persuades Birkin to help supervise three unruly older boys at her church's Sunday school.

Birkin visits the vicarage to collect payment and Alice gives him a tour of the cavernous, bare rooms.

The Ellerbecks' cat interrupts the parsonage tour by entering with a dead songbird clamped in its jaws.

Birkin notices that one falling figure in the mural has been rendered with extraordinary precision unlike the others.

Moon proposes a day off and the two friends share a picnic in the open wheat fields in the August heat.

The Ellerbeck organ committee travels to a Ripon warehouse, where Kathy plays hymns so loudly the dealer intervenes.

Birkin unexpectedly spots Alice and Reverend Keach browsing harmoniums at the same Ripon organ warehouse.

Reverend Keach delivers Birkin's final payment and makes clear he expects Birkin to leave now that the work is done.

On his way to the train station, Birkin rings the parsonage bell repeatedly, knowing the Keaches are not home.

While Birkin's emotional restoration is the novel's central concern, it is accomplished through a series of small, unheroic encounters that gradually draw him out of isolation. His insistence on living alone in the bell tower gives way to morning teas with Moon, visits from the irrepressible Kathy Ellerbeck, and an awkward but tender Sunday dinner with her family. Each encounter coaxes Birkin a little further from his self-protective shell, whether it is helping at Sunday school, enduring a tour of the Keach parsonage, or joining the Ellerbecks on their comic expedition to find a new organ. The trip to the Ripon warehouse brings an unexpected and life-altering piece of news about Moon alongside the accidental sighting of the Keaches. As the summer closes, Reverend Keach delivers Birkin's final payment and makes clear his time is up, setting in motion Birkin's reluctant but necessary departure.

Alone in the bell tower at night, Birkin privately fantasizes for the first time about a romance with Alice.

At a Sunday evening sing-along, Birkin performs an off-color army drinking song, marking himself as a cultural outsider.

After preaching at Barton Ferry, Birkin visits Lucy Sykes and notices the framed portrait of her soldier brother.

Riding home from Barton Ferry, Birkin shouts at empty cornfields and declares aloud that there is no God.

Birkin theorizes that the mural's precisely detailed falling man is the anonymous artist's hidden self-portrait.

Birkin opens up to Moon during morning tea and shares the full story of Vinny's serial infidelities.

Birkin impulsively tells Alice she is attractive and edges toward her before a visitor's arrival breaks the moment.

Birkin completes restoring the mural's final figures of the saved, knowing his summer work is essentially finished.

Moon produces a divining rod and uses its tremors to identify the exact spot in the field where they should dig.

After the coffin is opened, Birkin asks aloud whether Piers Hebron, a Crusades convert to Islam, was the mural's painter.

In the charged silence of the bell tower, Birkin chooses not to act on his feelings and says nothing to Alice.

In the closing frame, Birkin reveals he wrote this account years later and never once returned to Oxgodby.

Beneath the novel's quiet surface lies a series of revelatory moments that mark the true arc of Birkin's recovery. His first undisturbed night in the bell tower signals that healing is possible, while his growing kinship with the long-dead medieval painter gives him an unexpected mirror for his own suffering. The friendship with Moon deepens through honest confession, and Birkin's suppressed anger about the war erupts in an anguished outburst on a country road. His feelings for Alice intensify until they build to a moment of charged silence in the bell tower, where his choice not to act becomes the novel's moral pivot. The unearthing of Piers Hebron's coffin and the crescent medallion inside it unlock a revelation about the mural's forgotten creator, and Birkin completes the restoration knowing his own recovery is nearly complete. The closing memoir frame places the entire summer in retrospect, confirming that the month in the country was the turning point of Birkin's life.
