Routine search-and-destroy missions reveal an enemy that is both fearsome and achingly human, as the discovery of personal photographs forces the men to confront the humanity of those they are ordered to kill. Under the grudging guidance of Sergeant Campbell and after painful early failures, Caputo forges himself into a soldier, but the war in Vietnam begins dismantling him almost immediately. Moral clarity erodes with each impossible order, each dead boy soldier, and each village the company cannot bring itself to pity. The desk job at headquarters, with its morgue visits and endless casualty reports, accelerates his psychological breakdown until he no longer fears death at all. Returning to the front lines, Caputo crosses a series of final thresholds—taunting snipers, losing control of his men, and ultimately plotting a mission he knows may cross into murder. These turning points trace the precise shape of how an idealistic young man is consumed and hollowed out by war.
