Soren dies of brain cancer and finds himself in the office of a minor Zoroastrian demon named Xandern, alongside four other terrified souls.

Xandern reveals that Zoroastrianism is the one true religion and that everyone in the room, having followed the wrong faith, is bound for Hell.

Xandern discovers that Soren was an avid reader in life and assigns him a library containing every possible book as his personalized Hell.

Soren arrives in the library and is startled to find that his body has been restored to a younger, healthier version of itself.

Soren reads a sign on the library wall explaining that he can only escape by finding the book that accurately describes the story of his own earthly life.

A man named Biscuit discovers the first coherent text anyone has found: two words, 'sack it,' buried amid pages of gibberish.

Soren flees the group after noticing that they have begun using the food kiosks to procure alcohol.

Soren returns from his solo exploration to report that the library has no findable edge or endpoint.

Soren begins a romantic relationship with a woman named Betty from Mississippi, though he recognizes early on that their connection is primarily physical.

After roughly a century in the library, the residents form a university dedicated to studying and celebrating the coherent texts discovered each year.

A man named Dire Dan rises to power by claiming he received a divine vision commanding his followers to commit violence against everyone around them.

Cornered by Dire Dan's cult members, Rachel escapes capture by leaping into the library's vast central void.

The cult captures Soren and subjects him to more than a month of torture in captivity.

Seeing his chance to escape and end the cult's reign, Soren tackles Dire Dan over a railing and into the abyss, and they fall together for days.

A man named Master Took informs Soren that the library holds 959,312,000 books — more than the number of electrons in the universe — plunging Soren into total despair.

A devout Mormon named Soren Johansson dies of brain cancer and learns in the afterlife that Zoroastrianism was the one true religion all along, landing him in a temporary Hell shaped like an infinite library. To escape, he must find the single book that tells the story of his own life among every book that could ever be written. After forming early bonds with fellow residents, they build a makeshift society including a university devoted to studying the rare coherent texts they discover. Over a thousand years in, a violent cult leader named Dire Dan destroys Soren's world by separating him from Rachel, the great love of his immortal life, and subjecting him to weeks of torture. Soren escapes by dragging Dire Dan into the library's central void, where they fall together for days before Soren manages to pull himself onto a new floor. There, a man named Master Took reveals that the library contains more books than there are electrons in the universe, leaving Soren utterly without hope.

The core milestones of Soren's journey through the library Hell.

Xandern casually reveals that the horrific torture scene visible through his office window is staged and performed by actors who clock out shortly after.

On his first night in the library, Soren cries himself to sleep, overwhelmed by the revelation that his Mormon faith was wrong.

Soren orders a vanilla milkshake from a food kiosk, the same kind served at a beloved ice cream shop from his life in Utah.

Biscuit explains the Borges 'Library of Babel' concept referenced on the sign and describes the incomprehensible scale of the books surrounding them.

Discovering the 'sack it' book reduces Biscuit to tears as he tells the group about his life as an unhoused Vietnam War veteran who carried everything he owned in a single sack.

Biscuit develops an elaborate numerological reading of 'sack it' and declares that the group will find their books and escape the library within ten years.

Soren notices that every person he has encountered in the library is white and English-speaking, and wonders whether his wife is trapped somewhere in it too.

During Soren's absence, one of the library's residents dies for the first time and is reanimated, demonstrating how death works in Hell.

The university holds a ceremony to honor the most significant discovered text of the year: a complete sentence reading, 'The bat housed again four leaves of it.'

Rachel tells Soren about a 58th-year expedition in which eight people spent 23 years searching for the library's edge before silently turning back without a word.

Soren ends his relationship with his current partner Sandra and begins what will become a millennium-long romance with Rachel.

Dire Dan's followers bring Soren before the cult leader himself, who demands that Soren join the cult and submit to his authority.

After several fatal failed attempts, Soren manages to propel himself from the void onto a library floor, landing with most of his bones broken.

A man on Soren's new floor shows him a book containing a nearly complete paragraph — the most text anyone has ever found — briefly renewing Soren's hope of escape.

Soren encounters a woman named Wand also falling through the void, and the two form a brief romantic connection before being permanently torn apart when they try to land on a floor together.

Before being sent to the library, Soren and the other new arrivals experience the dark comedy of Xandern's mundane, bureaucratic afterlife office. In the library's earliest days, Biscuit becomes the group's unlikely guide to the scale of their predicament, explaining the Borges concept behind the library while also bearing the raw grief of his own life story. The residents slowly build rituals and culture, culminating in a university ceremony that treats a randomly generated sentence as a scholarly treasure. Rachel's story of a failed decades-long expedition to find the library's edge draws her and Soren into a relationship, though it begins only after Soren leaves his previous partner Sandra. After Dire Dan destroys that world, Soren's solitary descent leads to a fleeting moment of hope from a stranger's book and a brief but profound connection with a woman named Wand, who is ultimately lost to the void.

The secondary moments and relationships that shape Soren's long ordeal.

Xandern reviews each newly arrived soul's life story one by one and assigns each a version of Hell uniquely tailored to their personality and history.

Soren exits his room for the first time and sees the library's floors extending infinitely beneath him, with other disoriented people wandering the same level.

The group collectively grasps that every possible combination of characters fills the library's books, making finding any one specific text nearly impossible.

Elliott, a World War II veteran in the group, becomes the only person able to genuinely empathize with Biscuit's wartime trauma and grief.

Soren wonders for the first time whether his earthly wife might also be trapped somewhere in the enormous library.

Soren confides in Rachel that the university's celebrated text has stirred deep feelings of hopelessness about ever escaping the library.

Rachel opens up to Soren in turn, admitting she no longer knows how much more of the library's endless existence she can endure.

Rachel challenges Soren's persistent skepticism about the Zoroastrian afterlife, revealing that he has earned a reputation among the university as its 'resident non-believer.'

Soren realizes that his bond with Rachel is something categorically deeper than every other relationship he has formed in the library.

Dire Dan's cult corners both Rachel and Soren together, forcing them to flee and ultimately separating them forever.

Dire Dan kills Soren mid-fall in the abyss, but both men wake up the following day still plummeting side by side through the void.

After wandering a new region of the library for years and meeting only strangers, Soren accepts that he will never find Rachel again.

Overwhelmed by hopelessness, Soren throws himself back into the void and begins using a crude bone knife to kill himself each time he wakes, choosing endless falling over fruitless searching.

After losing Wand, Soren abandons all hope of meaningful human connection and devotes himself entirely and bleakly to the search for his book.

Having descended to the library's bottom floor after millions of years of searching, Soren sits alone reading the book that tells the story of his own life.

From the moment Xandern individually assigns each soul a Hell designed around their personality, Soren begins a long process of confronting the fragility of everything he once believed. His first sight of the library's infinite depth and the group's collective realization of what their task entails set the emotional stakes early. A pivotal conversation with Rachel, in which both confess their exhaustion and she challenges his ongoing skepticism, marks the turning point where personal connection briefly overcomes despair. The violence of Dire Dan's cult reaches its peak when Soren and Rachel are hunted together, forcing her into the void and leaving Soren to suffer alone before engineering a dangerous escape. Years of fruitless wandering after losing Rachel strip away Soren's emotional investment in other people entirely, and the loss of Wand cements that transformation. By the time Soren reaches the library's bottom floor after millions of years, he is a man reduced to a single strange, fragile hope that his effort will somehow be enough.

The key decisions, discoveries, and emotional shifts that transform Soren's spirit.
