A wounded American soldier arrives at a military hospital in Padua during World War I, where he falls into a passionate romance with his nurse, Luz. Their relationship survives his return to the front, but the peace brought by the armistice introduces new pressures — distance, money, and doubt — that begin to fracture their bond. A bitter argument over whether Luz will come to America exposes the cracks, and they part at a Milan train station with their quarrel unfinished. While the soldier sails home alone, Luz stays in Italy and is seduced by the major of an elite Italian battalion, writing to the soldier to confess and dismissing their love as a youthful mistake. The major ultimately abandons her, and the soldier, adrift in America, contracts gonorrhea from a stranger in a taxicab — a bleak final image of love's collapse.

The romance between a recovering soldier and his nurse Luz unfolds through a series of intimate, quiet moments — stolen evenings on the hospital rooftop, shared jokes before surgery, and small acts of devotion during recovery. Their bond feels so complete that the couple wants it publicly recognized as a marriage, even if the paperwork never follows. While the soldier is at the front, Luz floods him with fifteen letters expressing an almost desperate love, which he can only read all at once after the armistice. Back in Italy, the reunion is shadowed by practical conditions placed on their future, and a sick, unresolved farewell in Milan marks the beginning of the end. Luz eventually confesses her affair with an Italian major in writing, and even after the major abandons her, the soldier offers no reply to her subsequent letter.

The major's failure to marry Luz leaves her alone, mirroring exactly how she abandoned the soldier.

The soldier, adrift and disillusioned after Luz's rejection, seeks out a casual encounter in a taxicab and contracts a disease.

From the moment the soldier grips himself silent under anesthesia to the moment he is left with no reply and no future, every turning point in the story marks a loss of innocence. The couple's urgent, almost superstitious desire to formalize their love reveals how fragile they sense it to be, and the soldier's return to the front transforms Luz's passion into a one-sided correspondence read all out of order. Their postwar reunion brings conditions instead of joy — no drinking, a steady job — and the train quarrel exposes a relationship already straining under the weight of reality. Luz's decision to stay in Italy rather than follow the soldier home is the hinge on which everything else turns, and her subsequent letter — dismissing their love as naive and announcing plans to marry an Italian major — shatters the soldier's idealism. The major's failure to marry her closes the cycle, leaving both characters stranded by the same romantic logic that first brought them together.
