A Winter in New York

On Valentine's Day in New York, Iris Raven, a British chef, reaches for the last copy of a novel at a bookstore, only to have a stranger grab it first. Frustrated, she snaps at the man, blurting that her husband is dead. Walking home in shame, she admits the truth: Her ex-boyfriend Adam Bronson is alive and was never her husband. Iris invented the fiction as a coping mechanism. A former rising star of the London chef scene, she was targeted by Adam, a controlling and abusive partner, after her mother Vivien's death. She fled to New York six weeks earlier with two suitcases, chasing the city Vivien had loved through old movies and Sinatra songs.

Seven months later, Iris works as a chef at the Very Tasty Noodle House on Chrystie Street, run by her landlord and best friend Bobby Han. Bobby coaxes her out to the Feast of San Gennaro, an annual Italian festival in Little Italy. While sheltering in a doorway, Iris notices the hand-painted glass door of Belotti's, a gelateria (Italian ice-cream shop), and feels a jolt of recognition. At home, her mother's scrapbook reveals the connection: A 1985 photograph shows a young man named Santo in front of that same door, beside a torn mint-green napkin bearing a gelato recipe. Belotti's has served only vanilla gelato since 1911 and guards its recipe so fiercely that only two family members may know it at any time. The recipe on the napkin is Belotti's, given to Vivien by Santo decades ago.

Iris visits the gelateria the next morning and meets Giovanni Belotti, known as Gio, who runs the shop. He explains that his uncle Santo, whom he calls Papa because Santo raised him, recently suffered a stroke and lost parts of his memory, including the gelato recipe. Santo's brother Felipe, Gio's biological father, is the only other person who knows the recipe but is traveling abroad and cannot locate his copy. Iris, concealing her knowledge, offers to help recreate it through experimentation. When she tastes leftover gelato from before the stroke, she recognizes it instantly as the same recipe her mother made throughout her childhood.

Iris confides in Bobby, and they agree she cannot hand over the recipe without exposing that Santo shared the family secret with an outsider, potentially damaging his reputation and marriage to his wife, Maria. Instead, Iris begins spending mornings at the gelateria, gradually steering Gio toward the correct formula. During one visit, Gio recognizes her from the bookstore encounter, apologizes, and reveals that his own wife, Penny, died seven years ago. Iris is doubly burdened, knowing she told her lie to a genuine widower.

In alternating chapters set in 1985, the novel reveals how Vivien met Santo. Vivien was an 18-year-old former foster child from London, recruited to sing in a band that included Felipe Belotti on guitar and Charlie Raven, Iris's future father, on drums. Felipe introduced Vivien to Santo, and the two fell in love over two days. When the band prepared to leave on tour, Santo asked Vivien to stay, but she chose her career. As a parting gesture of trust, Santo tore a napkin in half and wrote the secret recipe across it. Vivien promised to return. In 1989, she came back to Mulberry Street with toddler Iris but saw Santo leaving the gelateria with Maria and their children. Realizing he had built a family, she returned to London for good.

Iris grows close to the Belotti family. She meets Gio's sister Sophia, who pushes for new flavors at the gelateria, and his 15-year-old daughter Bella, a shy pianist. When Iris helps Bella practice piano, Gio reacts sharply, and his tone triggers memories of Adam's controlling behavior. Iris stays away for several days. She encounters a busker in the park and, on impulse, takes the microphone and sings rock anthems to a growing crowd. Someone films the performance, and it goes semi-viral online. Gio texts an apology, and they reconcile.

Maria invites Iris to the family's Ognissanti (All Saints' Day) dinner, where Iris spots her mother in the background of a family photograph. She now understands the full connection: Felipe was in Vivien's band, which is how Vivien met Santo. After the dinner, Iris and Gio share their first kiss and begin a secret romance, keeping it private especially from Bella to protect the stability Gio rebuilt after Penny's death. Their bond deepens when Iris sings "Your Song" with Bella at a school Thanksgiving showcase, earning a standing ovation.

On Thanksgiving, Adam discovers Iris's location after Bella posts a video of the showcase online and unwittingly tags Iris's full name. He sends threatening messages, reveals he contacted Bella directly, and calls Iris "little mouse," his demeaning nickname for her. Iris replies with a terse warning and texts Bella a cover story. When Adam sends another threat later, Iris blocks his number entirely.

Felipe, meanwhile, arrives in New York and recognizes Iris as Vivien's daughter. He confronts her at the noodle house, demanding she tell Gio the truth, and shows her a VHS tape of Vivien performing, the first moving footage Iris has ever seen of her mother.

On Christmas Eve, Santo visits the gelateria and immediately recognizes Iris as Vivien's daughter. On Christmas Day, Iris gives him the torn napkin, returning the missing recipe. After the celebration, Santo takes Iris aside and asks her to leave without telling Gio about their families' connection, arguing the revelation would expose his betrayal and damage the family. Devastated, Iris writes Gio a letter confessing only the truth about Adam and warning him that Adam contacted Bella. She slides the letter under the gelateria door and hides in Felipe's self-storage unit.

Gio finds her there two days later, furious and heartbroken. He insists she return home and tells her he will come on New Year's Eve to say goodbye. Sophia visits Iris with groceries and urges her to stay, but Iris feels bound by Santo's request. She scatters her mother's ashes beneath an oak tree in the park and books a ticket to Toronto.

On New Year's Eve, Adam appears at Iris's door instead of Gio, having traveled to New York to reassert control. Bobby and his partner Robin arrive home from vacation at the same time as the Belotti family. Bobby tackles Adam, and Gio drags him outside. Iris steps forward and insists on confronting Adam herself, telling him she is no longer afraid and ordering him to leave. One by one, the Belottis, Bobby, and Robin each declare that Iris is their family. Adam retreats, defeated.

Gio reveals that Santo told the family everything about Vivien, the recipe, and Iris's connection to them all. Maria responded with grace, and Gio produces the torn napkin, which Maria wants Iris to have back. Iris tells Gio she loves him, and he responds, "Ti amo." They join the gathering upstairs as Sinatra's "New York, New York" plays.

Iris reflects that she came to New York searching for a fresh start and found a home. Unlike her mother, who left, Iris chooses to stay. In an epilogue set on Valentine's Day six weeks later, Gio surprises her with a checked blanket in the bed of a pickup truck, a playful callback to a joke she made during their bookstore encounter. They exchange gifts, content and settled, the novel they once fought over resting between them.
