Accidentally Amy is a standalone contemporary romantic comedy by Lynn Painter.
Isabella "Izzy" Shay, a human resources (HR) generalist, is running late for her first day at Ellis Enterprises, a large tech company. Waiting for her pumpkin spice latte at Scooter's Coffee, she does something uncharacteristic: When the barista calls for "Amy" three times with no taker and the drink matches her order, she claims it. Turning to leave, she collides with a tall stranger in a suit, spilling the latte all over his chest. The man responds with humor, and they share a flirtatious exchange, but Izzy panics about being late and bolts. As she leaves, she hears him say goodbye to "Amy" and realizes he believes that is her name.
Izzy enjoys her first day, shadowing Pam Carson, the HR manager. During a lunch break workout at the gym next door, she encounters the stranger, Blake, in the elevator. He starts to say he cannot stop thinking about her, and Izzy impulsively hits the emergency stop button so he can finish. They exchange numbers. Blake, readers learn, recently ended an engagement to his ex-fiancée Skye after discovering her pattern of dishonesty.
That afternoon, Pam introduces Izzy to Blake, the administrative vice president (AVP) who oversees all of administration, including HR. He recognizes her instantly. Forced to confess the truth about the latte, Izzy watches Blake's demeanor turn cold. Devastated, she silently mouths "nope" at him before leaving.
Outside of work, their lives take shape. Blake plays basketball with his brothers, Jason and AJ, and spends time with their partners. The family is close-knit; Jason despises Blake's ex for her dishonesty. Izzy lives in a fourplex owned by her grandparents alongside her cousins, including Josh, a workaholic who lives upstairs. She worries Blake's disapproval could end her career.
Over the following weeks, they avoid each other at work while tension builds. Izzy impresses Blake's boss Brad in a meeting with sharp ideas about training platforms, but Blake lectures her privately about integrity, using veiled references to the stolen latte. That evening, Izzy sends Blake a barrage of apologetic texts. He calls to assure her that her job is safe, and they reach a compromise: While Izzy the employee and Blake the AVP must remain professional, "Scooter's Amy" and "Mr. Chest," two strangers who met in a coffee shop, can text freely. Blake hesitantly agrees.
They begin a daily texting friendship parallel to their avoidance at the office. One evening, Izzy's car dies on the interstate during a violent storm, and Blake rescues her. She invites him in for pizza, and Josh's friends arrive for Billboard Assholes, a high-stakes trivia and physical challenge game where the loser's face goes on a billboard. Blake and Izzy team up, win, and afterward share an intense first kiss against his car. Izzy pulls away, recognizing that Blake's principles matter more to him than chemistry.
The next morning, Izzy presents Blake with a PowerPoint of friendship rules: They can never be alone together, they can "coincidentally" meet at set locations on set days, and they will never discuss work. Blake agrees. Their friendship deepens through these choreographed encounters and constant texting. Blake offers to fix Izzy's car in exchange for her cat-sitting his two cats while he travels to Boston for work. She stays at his apartment, and they FaceTime every evening. Blake reflects on growing up with a father who lied constantly, which explains his extreme sensitivity to dishonesty and rigid ethics.
When Blake returns from Boston, he finds Izzy asleep on his couch. She kisses him while half-asleep, then panics and claims she was dreaming about someone else. That same morning, Blake receives an email with a reconfigured org chart: HR is no longer under his division. Izzy is no longer his subordinate. He races to her apartment, tells her they can be more than friends, and insists they go on a proper date first.
At dinner, they play an "information speed round," covering typically off-limits first-date questions. Blake admits he has stronger feelings for Izzy than he ever had for Skye. Back at his building, Izzy hits the elevator's emergency stop button, and they have sex against the wall. That night, Blake tells Izzy he loves her, and she realizes she is falling in love, too.
Blake receives a second revised org chart on Saturday afternoon but decides to ignore it to enjoy the date. At 2:00 a.m. Sunday, unable to sleep, he opens it and confirms his fear: HR is back under his division. They spend a blissful Sunday together at a farmers' market and the zoo, but Blake carries the weight of what he knows. Monday morning, he meets Brad at 6:00 a.m., confesses everything about his relationship with Izzy, and learns devastating news: As part of post-merger workforce reductions, Izzy's position is being eliminated. Blake approved the cuts in Boston, but the spreadsheet contained only employee numbers, not names. The layoffs are happening Tuesday, and the information is strictly confidential.
All Monday, Blake responds to Izzy's texts with terse one-word answers. Late that night he texts that he needs to talk before work, but Izzy assumes he is ending the relationship and ignores his messages. Tuesday morning, Pam tells Izzy her position has been eliminated. When Izzy reaches Blake by phone, she asks when he knew and whether he played any part. He answers honestly: yesterday morning, and yes. Furious that he knew and did not warn her, and angrier when she learns he disclosed their relationship to Brad, Izzy declares there is no "us" and hangs up.
Josh rallies friends for a supportive night out and confiscates Izzy's phone. The next morning, Izzy discovers 25 LinkedIn messages from employers with glowing recommendations. On one call, a contact accidentally mentions Blake's name, and Izzy realizes he personally called dozens of contacts to help her find a job.
Blake drives to Izzy's apartment with pizza, wine, flowers, and apologies, sitting on her stoop for two hours in the rain. She never arrives. He throws everything in the dumpster and leaves. Meanwhile, having learned about the referrals, Izzy goes to Blake's building and falls asleep against his door. When Blake returns, she asks why he called all those employers. He tells her he would do anything to make her happy. Inside, Izzy reads his unread texts, including his confession that he thinks he loves her. She looks up and tells him she thinks she loves him, too.
The next day, Blake surprises Izzy at her apartment and finds her hiding items she retrieved from the dumpster: his wilted flowers in a vase, the washed wine bottle, and the pizza box. Overwhelmed, Blake tells her he loves her using her full name, Isabella Clarence. She demands his middle name. It is also Clarence. She asks if he believes in fate. He tells her he did not until he met her.
Six months later, Izzy has moved into Blake's apartment and works in HR at Google. Blake has been promoted to executive vice president at Ellis. Josh has moved into Izzy's old apartment. Izzy reflects that she has belonged to Blake since the moment she stole a latte and accidentally became Scooter's Amy.
