The tragic arc of Amsterdam is constructed from pivotal decisions and quietly charged revelations that expose each character's deepest flaws. From small funeral moments—Clive's memory of proposing to Molly, Vernon's editorial ambitions, and Rose Garmony's private hatred of her husband's former lover—the novel establishes the hypocrisy underlying each character's public face. Clive's internal transformation on his journey to the Lake District, from grieving friend to misanthropic artist, prepares the ground for his moral failure during the assault. A brief phone call in which Clive casually mentions the attack becomes the weapon Vernon later detonates against him, triggering their furious and final argument.
