As Annie enters adolescence, her distrust deepens through a series of sharp confrontations and disturbing dreams, building toward a bitter public clash that splits mother and daughter further apart than ever. A prolonged illness during months of rain forces an internal reckoning, and when Annie destroys the family photographs in a feverish haze, something inside her breaks permanently free. By the time she walks to the jetty, she has emotionally separated from everyone she has ever known and carries plans her parents know nothing about. Her mother's tears at the dock are the last image of a bond that Annie cannot fully leave behind even as her ship pulls away.

The revelations, decisions, and emotional shifts that drive Annie's transformation.
