Ambedkar receives an invitation from the Jat-Pat-Todak Mandal to preside over a Hindu caste reform conference.

The organizing committee asks Ambedkar to revise his speech after finding its content too incendiary.

Ambedkar refuses to alter his speech and withdraws from the conference entirely.

Ambedkar publishes the undelivered speech as a printed text distributed at his own expense.

Ambedkar introduces himself as a member of an untouchable caste and acknowledges the irony of his position.

Ambedkar argues that social reform must come before political reform, drawing on historical evidence to make his case.

Ambedkar argues that social reform must also precede economic reform, identifying caste as the root obstacle to both.

Ambedkar argues that caste is not a division of labor but a hierarchical division of the laborers themselves.

Ambedkar argues that Hindu society does not truly exist and is only a fragmented collection of self-serving castes.

Ambedkar argues that the caste system makes Hinduism incapable of winning or absorbing new converts.

Ambedkar proposes liberty, equality, and fraternity as the founding ideals for a reformed Indian society.

Ambedkar rejects the Chaturvarnya proposal, arguing it merely replaces thousands of castes with a new form of the same oppression.

Ambedkar argues that the true key to abolishing caste is rejecting the sacred authority of the Shastras.

Ambedkar argues that Brahmin opposition to reform makes the abolition of caste from within Hinduism virtually impossible.

Ambedkar announces his personal decision to leave Hinduism and work for caste reform from outside the faith.

Ambedkar is invited to preside at a caste reform conference but clashes with the organizers over the radicalism of his speech, ultimately publishing it himself. He opens by acknowledging his own untouchable status before laying out his central thesis: social reform must precede both political and economic reform. He dismantles caste by showing it is a hierarchy of persons, not merely a division of labor, and that Hindu society lacks cohesion because caste keeps each group entirely unto itself. He proposes liberty, equality, and fraternity as the ideals to replace the caste order, then demolishes the Chaturvarnya alternative as merely a new form of the same old oppression. He argues the real solution is rejecting the religious authority of the Shastras, but that Brahmin opposition makes internal reform virtually impossible. The address ends with Ambedkar announcing his departure from Hinduism, vowing to continue working for the annihilation of caste from outside the faith.

The central arc of Ambedkar's anti-caste argument.

Ambedkar writes his speech for the conference and submits it to the organizers for advance review.

The reform movement splits into a political reform party and a social reform party, with the political party carrying the day.

Ambedkar uses the example of the Balais people to illustrate how untouchables are kept subordinate through rigid social rules.

Ambedkar argues that no one will join a reform movement unless guaranteed equal treatment after the revolution succeeds.

Ambedkar refutes the biological and racial justifications for caste, stating that no people of pure race exist anywhere.

Ambedkar argues that the anti-social spirit — each caste protecting only its own interests — is the worst feature of caste.

Ambedkar argues that the caste system prevents Hindus from integrating with India's Indigenous tribal communities.

Ambedkar argues that higher castes actively conspire to prevent lower castes from adopting higher-caste customs or dress.

Ambedkar argues that caste breeds indifferentism, robbing Hindus of mutual trust and fellow-feeling toward coreligionists.

Ambedkar argues that caste destroys public spirit entirely, confining a Hindu's loyalty and charity to their own caste alone.

Ambedkar argues that Chaturvarnya would be most oppressive for the Shudras permanently fixed at the base of the new system.

Ambedkar argues that Chaturvarnya is not a new idea but an ancient one that has already been tried and failed.

Ambedkar distinguishes Hindu caste from social groupings in other cultures, arguing Hindu caste has no organic binding force beyond its name.

Ambedkar argues that inter-caste marriage — not merely shared dining — is the essential force needed to genuinely blur caste divisions.

Ambedkar calls on Hindu society to honestly evaluate which traditions are worth keeping and to stop venerating the past uncritically.

After submitting his speech for review, Ambedkar traces the reform movement's split between social and political factions, showing how the political faction's victory has stalled real change and using the Balais people as a concrete example of untouchables' subordination. He methodically dismantles every defense of caste — racial purity, labor efficiency, social cohesion — while showing how caste breeds anti-social tendencies, blocks integration with Indigenous communities, and empowers higher castes to actively suppress the lower. He then attacks caste's effect on Hindu inner life, showing it produces indifferentism, destroys public spirit, and limits every Hindu's loyalty to their own caste group alone. Turning to proposed solutions, he dismisses Chaturvarnya's fourfold system as both ancient and already proven to have failed, and distinguishes the organic social groupings of other cultures from Hinduism's rigid caste divisions. He closes by arguing that inter-caste marriage and the wholesale abandonment of old caste names are essential to any genuine reform, and calls on Hindu society to honestly evaluate its traditions rather than venerating the past uncritically.

The specific social and religious harms caused by caste.

Ambedkar accepts the conference invitation against his better judgment, hoping to advance the cause of social reform.

The submitted speech reveals to the organizers the full radicalism of Ambedkar's anti-caste position, triggering demands for revision.

Ambedkar establishes his core thesis that political revolutions have always been preceded by social and religious revolutions.

Ambedkar argues that caste causes unemployment by associating specific jobs with specific castes rather than with individual capability.

Ambedkar argues that placing a convert within a caste is nearly impossible, exposing Hinduism's structural failure to gain new members.

Ambedkar argues that caste eliminates any shared purpose or common identity, making the formation of a unified nation impossible.

Ambedkar argues that caste is a powerful mechanism for suppressing individual independence and stamping out any reform movement from within.

Ambedkar raises the unresolved problem of assigning women to classes under Chaturvarnya, exposing the system's practical futility.

Ambedkar argues that Chaturvarnya would collapse because no mechanism exists to compel higher classes to actually fulfill their duties.

Ambedkar argues that reason and morality are a reformer's greatest weapons, but Hindu practice systematically disables both.

Ambedkar draws a decisive distinction between religious principles and religious rules, arguing Hinduism has degenerated into rigid rule-following.

Ambedkar argues that the Hindu religion functions as a system of law, stripping believers of freedom to act by conscience.

Ambedkar proposes state regulation of the priesthood, including fixed quotas on priests, as a necessary step toward religious reform.

Ambedkar insists that all old caste names must be abolished entirely, warning that retaining them will cause any reform to revert.

Ambedkar confirms he will not abandon the struggle against caste but will pursue it as someone who has left Hinduism.

Ambedkar's reluctant acceptance of the conference invitation sets in motion a confrontation when organizers discover the full radicalism of his position and demand revisions he refuses to make. He pivots from personal circumstance to universal principle, establishing his foundational claim that social and religious revolutions must precede political ones, and then reveals how caste actively damages the economy by tying jobs to inherited identity rather than merit. Moving through caste's specific failures — its blockade of new converts, its erasure of national unity, its suppression of any reform impulse — he escalates to the revelation that caste is specifically designed to prevent the very movement that could dismantle it. His dissection of Chaturvarnya exposes the system's practical impossibilities: no mechanism compels upper classes to fulfill their duties, and the unresolved question of women's placement renders the whole scheme futile. In the final phase, he draws the decisive distinction between religious principles and rigid rules, proposes state regulation of the priesthood as a concrete reform measure, and insists that old caste names must be abolished entirely to prevent reform from reverting to the old system.
