When editor Ikem Osodi refuses to submit to government control of the press, Sam orchestrates his suspension and ultimately his murder, disguised as an escape attempt. Chris, having gone into hiding, works to expose the truth to international media while evading capture on charges of plotting a coup. His flight north with allies ends in his own death as he intervenes to save a young woman from a drunken soldier. With both Chris and Ikem gone and Sam's regime collapsed, it falls to Beatrice to gather the survivors and create new meaning from the tragedy. A new military government under Major-General Lango seizes power after Sam's regime collapses in the wake of the coup.

Before the political catastrophe unfolds, the ruling trio of friends are already straining under the weight of power and principle, shaped by formative experiences like Ikem's campaign against public executions and his mythological prose poem about Abazon's origins. The social world around the three friends — marked by debates at bars, emotional confrontations, and moments of solidarity — reveals how personal relationships erode under authoritarian pressure. After Ikem's murder, a web of ordinary people including taxi drivers, students, and neighbours forms to shelter Chris and resist the regime's propaganda. Soldiers raiding Beatrice's apartment and a pregnancy discovered in grief mark the human cost of the crackdown. Chris's disguised flight north, planned across safe houses and culminating in a bus journey into drought-stricken Abazon, strips him of his elite identity before his death. The final collapse of Sam's regime and its replacement by another military government frames the tragedy within a cycle of failed governance that the survivors must now navigate.

From the earliest moments of the novel, small acts of betrayal and opportunism set the tragedy in motion, as Professor Okong's sycophancy and Sam's growing paranoia poison the government from within. Beatrice's humiliating experience at Sam's retreat — first feeling used as local color for a foreign journalist, then being abruptly dismissed — becomes a catalyst for her prophetic authority and her final, emotional meeting with Ikem. Key revelations — about the drought as political punishment, about Elewa's pregnancy, about the false news planted to protect Chris — show how truth is constantly manipulated and reborn in Kangan's crisis. The regime's mechanisms of repression, from Ossai's chilling promotion to anonymous phone warnings, illuminate the human cost of authoritarianism at every level of society. Chris's journey north strips away his elite identity, culminating in a death that carries the warning he had already begun to understand. At the naming ceremony, the stories of Chris and Ikem are preserved by survivors who begin to build a new community from the wreckage of the old one.

The decisions, discoveries, and emotional shifts that drove three friends apart.
