Back on Earth, a crisis with her niece Frances leads Joan to permanently take over her care from her neglectful sister Barbara. When their relationship is threatened by institutional homophobia, Joan tries to end things with Vanessa, but Vanessa refuses to give her up. Before Joan could join NASA, she faced rejection on her first attempt and had to rebuild and reapply. Once accepted, she navigated a training environment defined by the sexism of pilot candidates like Jimmy Hayman while building her closest friendships with Griff, Donna, and Vanessa. Her bond with Vanessa deepened on a stargazing trip and through small, quiet moments like picking up Frances from school together. Historical milestones like the Columbia launch and Sally Ride's flight marked the larger context of their work, while Barbara's engagement and remarriage accelerated Frances's difficult home situation. Joan's growing certainty that she belongs in Mission Control rather than repeatedly in space sets the stage for her critical role during the final crisis. The pool ends aboard the crippled Navigator, where Lydia's last act before losing consciousness saves everyone still alive on the shuttle.
