When Mac Delaney's literature group discovers that their school copies of The Devil's Arithmetic have words blacked out with marker, Mac and his friends begin a campaign against the censorship. After a dismissive meeting with their principal fails to resolve anything, Mac learns the censorship was done by his own teacher, Ms. Sett, who also glorifies Christopher Columbus against Mac's objections. Mac, Denis, and Marci escalate their fight to a school board presentation, but the board brushes them aside just as the principal had. The tide turns dramatically when author Jane Yolen herself appears at a second, far more crowded school board meeting and speaks against censoring children's books. With the crowd galvanized by Hoa and Aaron's powerful live demonstration of what black rectangles do to a text, the community becomes more engaged and willing to challenge authority. Mac feels genuine hope for the first time, recognizing that the value in standing up for his beliefs does not depend on an immediate resolution.

Running alongside the censorship fight is a series of personal and family events that shape Mac's character and relationships. Mac's father Mike, an eccentric man who claims to be an alien, creates tension at home when he smashes a cherished heirloom mug without remorse, prompting Mac to write an email to Jane Yolen fueled by his compounded anger. The situation at home worsens when Mike steals from the family and disappears, forcing Mac to carry a painful secret from his best friends Denis and Marci. Meanwhile, the friendships among the three grow closer and more complex as Denis plays matchmaker, ultimately leading to Mac asking Marci to the homecoming dance. The fight against censorship draws in more community members, including Aaron's father, and ends with townspeople boldly challenging many of their town's restrictive rules. After everything settles, Mac and Marci acknowledge they are too young to date and settle into a deeper, more honest friendship.

Mac's father reveals during a late-night drive that he cannot love the way other humans do, and his sudden disappearance later forces Mac to finally share the secret of the alien stories with his family. Mac struggles to process his emotions, filing them away like a numb office worker until his grandad helps him release them through tears and honest shouting during the first bookstore protest. Classmate Hoa's reclamation of her real name and Mac's mom's failed private meeting with the principal both deepen Mac's conviction that adults routinely hide the truth from children. Jane Yolen's encouraging email reply and Mac's direct confrontation with his father in the garage mark the final steps in Mac's transformation from an angry, confused boy into someone with clear values and the courage to act on them.
