James Holden and the Rocinante crew join the effort, helping destroy the Azure Dragon spotter ship and welcoming Clarissa Mao as a new crew member. Meanwhile, Michio Pa breaks from the Free Navy, and the combined fleet retakes Ceres as Marco's hold on the Belt begins to fracture. The true plan—using the converted ice hauler Giambattista to capture Medina Station—succeeds when Bobbie disables the rail gun defenses and Holden bluffs the station into surrender. Across the solar system, the war unfolds through dozens of smaller stories that together define its full human cost. Pa's Connaught strips colony ships for the Free Navy while her doubts about Marco quietly deepen, and ordinary workers like Salis take pride in installing Medina's new defenses as a symbol of Belter sovereignty. On Luna, Holden's reunion with his family and his father's offhand slur plant the seeds of a counternarrative project, while on Ganymede the murder of scientist Karvonides reveals the brutal coercion keeping civilians in line. The war reaches its political turning point through Sanjrani's dire economic warnings, Dawes's quiet backroom diplomacy at Tycho, and Pa's morally deliberate assault on Pallas Station. Marco's inability to control his own coalition accelerates as he publicly humiliates his son before the war council, blind to the coalition closing in on Medina. The story ends where it began—with civilians—as Namono, Anna, and Nami board a colony ship toward a new world, hoping humanity has finally learned something.

Filip's discovery that his mother is alive cracks his inherited loyalty to Marco, a fracture that deepens through the Ceres shooting, Marco's cold manipulation, and a public humiliation that finally severs his faith in his father. Pa's mutiny is born from a specific moral crisis—Marco's decision to abandon Ceres civilians reveals that his revolution has betrayed the very people it claimed to liberate. Holden's secret act of disarming torpedoes to spare Filip forces a brutal reckoning with leadership and loyalty that Amos refuses to let him escape. The war's resolution hinges on two quiet, definitive moments: Filip dropping his weapon and renaming himself Nagata on Callisto, and Naomi accepting that her son's fate is beyond her reach as the crew springs the trap that erases Marco's fleet from the universe.
