Before You Knew My Name

Alice Lee, an 18-year-old from small-town Wisconsin, narrates from beyond death, proposing to tell her own story rather than let others define her by her violent ending. She arrives in New York City on her birthday carrying a duffel bag, $600 in cash, and a vintage Leica camera she stole from Mr. Jackson, her former high school art teacher. Alice is a former ward of the state whose mother died by suicide when Alice was 14, after which she was placed with Gloria D, her mother's cousin and legal guardian. Alice foreshadows that she will soon be murdered and renamed "Jane Doe," and that a lonely woman will discover her body by the Hudson River.

On the same night, Ruby Jones, a 36-year-old graphic designer from Melbourne, Australia, lands at JFK. Ruby has fled a years-long affair with Ash, a coworker engaged to another woman. At a friend's wedding, Ruby realized her life had stalled while she waited for Ash to choose her. She quit her job and booked a one-way ticket to New York, settling into a studio apartment on the Upper West Side, where she sinks into isolation, barely leaving her bed for a week.

Alice, by contrast, thrives. She moves in with Noah, an elderly man on the Upper West Side who advertised a room for rent. Noah lives with a large brown dog named Franklin in an elegant apartment with a piano and chandelier. He lets Alice stay rent-free, keeping a ledger on the refrigerator door to track what she will owe. He leaves small gifts on her bed, and Alice posts handwritten IOUs on the fridge in return. On her eighth day, Noah creates a dog-walking job specifically for her. Alice senses his generosity is motivated by something personal: He wants to ensure she comes home each day.

Through flashbacks, Alice reveals what happened before New York. Her best friend Tammy gave her a flyer from Mr. Jackson advertising for life models at $200 cash. Desperate for money before aging out of foster care, Alice called him and lied about her age, claiming she was 19. He photographed her in increasingly exploitative circumstances, grooming and manipulating her into an abusive relationship while framing everything as art and equality. When Alice accidentally revealed she was turning 18 rather than 19, Mr. Jackson panicked at the realization she had been underage throughout. He screamed at her and ordered her to leave. Devastated, Alice stole his hidden cash and his mother's Leica, wanting him to feel the loss she felt. She boarded a bus to New York on her birthday.

In the present, Noah throws Alice a birthday party and gives her a check for photography school enrollment. He reveals that Alice reminds him of a daughter taken overseas by her mother after his marriage ended, in part due to his sexual orientation. Alice begins to imagine a real future.

On the morning of April 15, Alice goes out before dawn to photograph lightning over the Hudson. On the rocks by the river, a stranger asks for a light and becomes enraged when she does not engage. He strikes her with the camera's detachable lens, strangles her, and sexually assaults her as she dies.

That same morning, Ruby goes running in Riverside Park during a heavy storm. Near the waterfront, she spots something purple at the water's edge, then recognizes a hand, orange fingernails, and yellow hair. She calls 911 and waits alone until police arrive. Detective O'Byrne, a senior homicide investigator, gives her his card. Alice, narrating from beyond death, describes reaching out to Ruby but being unable to make contact.

The media names the victim "Jane Doe." Ruby gives a formal police interview but cannot recall useful details, and she begins obsessively following the investigation. She discovers a PTSD article explaining her symptoms and registers for a support group, where she meets Lennie Lau, an embalmer at a Brooklyn funeral home. Lennie invites Ruby to join Death Club, a small discussion group Lennie founded with two friends: Josh, a journalist who nearly died in a bike accident, and Sue, whose teenage daughter was killed in a car crash nearly 20 years earlier. The group meets regularly to discuss questions about death over food and drinks, becoming Ruby's anchor.

As the weeks pass, Alice describes learning to nudge Ruby's thoughts from beyond death, dropping ideas into her mind like ripples in water. She takes credit for guiding Ruby to the PTSD article and the Death Club registration.

Nearly six weeks after the murder, Tammy sees a forensic sketch resembling Alice and contacts the police. Gloria D provides a DNA sample, and Alice is officially identified. Josh learns the name through a journalist contact and tells Ruby, who cries as she says "Alice Lee" aloud for the first time. That evening, they share their first kiss, but the next day Josh reveals he is still technically married. Ruby, devastated by the parallel to Ash, cuts herself off from Death Club entirely.

Isolated, Ruby begins returning to the crime scene daily. A well-dressed stranger named Tom Martin introduces himself at the spot where she found Alice's body. Over subsequent meetings, Tom grows unsettlingly interested in the murder. When Ruby admits she found the body, he asks with eager curiosity what Alice looked like. He grabs her arm aggressively when a runner passes too close and kisses her without consent. As he leaves, Tom refers to Alice being out in the park "taking her pictures," a detail never reported publicly.

Ruby visits Noah, who describes Alice in loving detail, including her attachment to the Leica. Alice's final IOU, written the morning of her death, read simply "Help," the beginning of an unfinished sentence. Ruby reconnects with Lennie and Sue and describes Tom's impossible knowledge and aggressive behavior. Sue asks whether Ruby trusts her instinct. Ruby admits she is afraid to be right.

Ruby returns to the park before dawn and sees Tom on the rocks below. Through the connection Alice has been building in Ruby's mind, Ruby experiences a visceral vision of the murder, then turns and runs. She hears a splash as Tom throws something into the river.

Ruby reports Tom to Detective O'Byrne. A search of the Hudson recovers the Leica's detachable lens with specks of Alice's blood in its grooves. O'Byrne traces undeveloped film to a photo lab where Tom dropped off the roll but never collected the prints, which include Alice's final photographs of the stormy river. A cigarette butt from the crime scene yields DNA matching samples from Alice's body. Tom Martin is arrested. Investigators find child sexual abuse material on his computer, fake dating profiles, and evidence of stalking a former girlfriend.

Ruby ends her relationship with Ash, texting him not to come to New York and to commit to his fiancée. She reconciles with Josh, and they begin a relationship. Noah pays for Alice's funeral in Wisconsin but does not attend. Tammy, Tammy's mother, and Gloria D sit in the front row of a packed chapel. Mr. Jackson has left town; Alice predicts he will eventually pursue another young girl, and that girl will eventually come forward.

On the first day of summer, Ruby and Noah walk to the spot where Alice was found. Noah carries a rainbow of roses, and Ruby carries a silver padlock engraved with the letter A. They throw the roses into the Hudson, and Ruby clips the padlock to the railing. She says, "Thank you, Alice Lee," and walks away.

Noah joins Death Club at Ruby's invitation. At a dive bar near Riverside Park, the five members discuss where the dead go. Noah explains that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, meaning every atom of Alice continues to exist. Alice narrates a vision of an alternate life in which she and Ruby meet as living women and become friends. She reflects that Ruby was always the person she was looking for. As Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" plays, Alice watches Josh reach for Ruby's hand and feels herself dissolving, likening the sensation to falling asleep after a long, lovely day.
