The Bhagavad Gita opens with blind king Dhritarashtra asking his advisor Sanjaya to describe the battle between the Kauravas and Pandavas. On the battlefield, the warrior Arjuna recognizes family members among the enemy ranks and throws down his bow in despair. The god Krishna, serving as Arjuna's charioteer, responds by teaching that the soul is eternal, that duty must be fulfilled, and that actions should be performed without attachment to their results. Krishna reveals that he himself has been reincarnated across ages and returns whenever goodness weakens in the world. The climax of their conversation arrives when Krishna grants Arjuna divine sight, revealing his true cosmic form — radiant as a thousand suns — which overwhelms Arjuna and dissolves all his doubt. Arjuna ultimately dedicates his life to Krishna's teachings, while Sanjaya closes the story with a prayer proclaiming its sacred truths.

Arjuna questions whether any kingdom is worth so much bloodshed among kin, and Krishna challenges him by calling his hesitation unworthy of a celebrated warrior. He explains sacrifice, fasting, and meditation as spiritual practices, and later distinguishes people born with divine tendencies from those with demonic ones. Krishna identifies lust, rage, and greed as the three doors to hell and defines the two forms of renunciation — sannyasa and tyaga — as the highest paths of spiritual practice. Throughout, Arjuna grows from a hesitant questioner into a student seeking deeper understanding of the divine.
