The book opens by exposing how incompetent English colonizers were saved by Indigenous generosity and then by the forced labor of kidnapped Africans, establishing enslaved labor as the economic foundation of America. Harriot traces how colonial dependence on that labor led to the legal enshrining of hereditary slavery and the brutal exploitation of West African agricultural expertise in the Carolinas. Black resistance — from the British Army's offer of freedom during the Revolution to the Haitian uprising and the Underground Railroad — continuously destabilized the slave economy and helped end the Civil War. Reconstruction offered brief political promise, but racist terrorism, voter disenfranchisement, and new legislation rapidly reversed those gains and inaugurated the Jim Crow era. Despite coordinated federal suppression through programs like COINTELPRO and the prison-industrial complex, Black Americans kept fighting. Barack Obama's presidency ultimately forces the conclusion that systemic racism — not any deficiency in Black people — has always been America's defining problem.

Harriot begins with his own origin story — a homeschool education that centered Black history — before tracing how Portuguese colonizers built their empires on a state-run African slave trade, erasing individuals like Juan Garrido and King Musa I from the historical record. The Gullah Geechee community in the Carolinas and armed rebels like Jemmy show how Black people maintained culture and fierce agency despite captivity. Onesimus and Robert Smalls demonstrate how individual Black ingenuity repeatedly changed the course of American history without receiving proper credit. Reconstruction's promise collapses through Andrew Johnson's betrayal of freed people, the codification of Jim Crow via Plessy v. Ferguson, and the horror of Sam Hose's lynching. The thread concludes with the Tuskegee Airmen's military triumph and a Wilmington white mob's violent overthrow of a legitimately elected Black-majority government — a recurring pattern of Black excellence met with violent white reaction.

Harriot opens by announcing his subversive approach — stripping enslavers of individual identity just as history stripped enslaved Africans of theirs — before revealing that Black explorers like Esteban preceded white settlers across North America. African queens like Nzinga and rebels like Deslondes demonstrate that Black people actively dismantled the slave trade from without and within. Key revelations follow: Christianity was weaponized against enslaved people and then transformed into a tool of resistance through the Black church and the Free African Society; W. E. B. Du Bois reframes the Civil War by arguing enslaved people were the true architects of emancipation; and John Brown's Harper's Ferry raid shows white allies acting on Black-led strategy. Later turning points expose how institutional violence — from Hoover's FBI to the prison system — continuously adapted to suppress Black freedom. The final arc reveals that the Republican Party's Southern strategy weaponized white fear, and that Trump's mythology of American greatness confirms the book's central thesis: America's story is built on exploitation, denial, and the refusal to reckon with its crimes.
