Butler concludes that drag performances expose the artificial and arbitrary nature of gender norms, challenging heteronormativity's stability.

Butler opens the book by asking which bodies come to matter and why, framing materiality and performativity as urgent philosophical problems. In the Introduction, Butler establishes that sex is a Foucauldian regulatory ideal and defines performativity as the reiterative practice through which discourse produces the effects it names. Chapters 1 and 2 trace the exclusion of the feminine from classical philosophy and introduce the lesbian phallus as a deconstructive challenge to Lacan's masculine-centric symbolic order. Chapter 3 challenges the heteronormative logic embedded in theories of sexual identification, while Chapter 4 uses the film Paris Is Burning to show that drag is simultaneously subversive and reinforcing of gender norms. The literary chapters turn to Cather and Larsen to demonstrate intersectional analysis, before Chapter 7 critiques Žižek's foreclosure of the feminine. Butler concludes by advocating for the reclamation of queer as a political term and drag as a practice that exposes the constructed, unstable nature of gender norms.

Butler's headline arguments from the Preface through the final chapter.

Butler responds to critiques of Gender Trouble, framing Bodies That Matter as an attempt to address questions about performativity and agency.

Butler argues that the materialization of sexual difference occurs through regulated, repeated practices rather than biological fact.

Butler establishes that heterosexual norms produce abjected beings excluded from cultural roles while simultaneously generating intelligible bodies.

Butler compares Aristotle's and Foucault's contrasting accounts of the soul and body, questioning whether either allows for genuine resistance.

Butler expands Plato's concept of matter to include animals, women, and enslaved people as categories excluded from philosophical discourse.

Butler analyzes Freud's essay on narcissism, exploring how bodily pain generates libidinal investment and links the physical to the psychic.

Butler argues that body parts do not precede psychic investiture but are constituted simultaneously with the psychic energy directed at them.

Butler warns against applying Freud's theory linking pathology to arousal within AIDS-era discourses that conflate illness with gay sexuality.

Butler argues that language and materiality are mutually implicated, rejecting any strict binary opposition between them.

Butler draws on Althusser's concept of interpellation to show how social frameworks continuously shape gender identity through performative acts.

Butler highlights Venus Xtravaganza's murder during filming as evidence of the lethal consequences of racial and gender marginalization.

Butler reads Cather's 'Tommy the Unsentimental' as a story where Tommy sacrifices her desire for Jessica to preserve heterosexual and capitalist norms.

Butler analyzes Clare's act of passing as white in Larsen's novel as a risky, erotic idealization of a dominant social identity.

Butler engages with Žižek's Sublime Object of Ideology and his use of Lacanian foreclosure to explain failures in ideological discourse.

Butler argues that drag performs an ungrieved loss of fixed gender identification, connecting drag performance to psychoanalytic melancholia.

Butler opens by situating Bodies That Matter as a direct response to unresolved questions from Gender Trouble, particularly around agency and constraint. The Introduction and Chapter 1 establish that sexual difference materializes through repetition, that heterosexual norms create abjected beings, and that both Aristotle and Foucault fail to leave space for genuine resistance. Chapter 2 digs into Freud's narcissism essay, warning against conflating pathology with sexuality in AIDS-era discourse, and argues that language and materiality are always mutually implicated rather than opposed. Chapter 4 brings in Althusser's concept of interpellation to show how gender is actively performed rather than passively received, and foregrounds Venus Xtravaganza's murder as a stark reminder of the lethal stakes of marginalization. The literary chapters uncover how Tommy's sacrificial renunciation of desire in Cather's story funds heterosexuality, and how Clare's racial passing in Larsen's novel constitutes an erotic idealization of dominance. The book closes by connecting drag's ambivalence to Lacanian melancholia, showing that performance mourns the loss of identities that heteronormativity refuses to grieve.

The supporting arguments and secondary moves that build the book's case.

Butler situates the book between philosophical traditions that avoid the body and feminist traditions that uncritically idealize it.

Butler reveals that assuming a sex is a constrained act of identification governed by regulatory schemas, not a free individual choice.

Butler shows that an infant is 'girled' the moment a doctor declares its sex, demonstrating that sex is not prior to discourse.

Butler exposes phallogocentrism in classical philosophy, arguing that the feminine is constituted as the site of its own philosophical erasure.

Butler reveals that Freud's theory of erotogenization produces the symbolic phallus as the master signifier of sexual difference.

Butler demonstrates that the lesbian phallus functions as a transferable phantasm, severing the phallus from any necessary link to male anatomy.

Butler challenges the grammatical fiction of the pronoun 'I' as a pre-existing subject, arguing the 'I' always already assumes a sexuality.

Butler reveals that heterosexuality constitutes itself by relegating non-heterosexual identities to an abjected, socially excluded realm.

Butler calls for a democratic social configuration that recognizes identities in their multiple expressions rather than excluding some for others.

Butler critiques feminist analyses that dismiss drag as simply misogynistic, arguing such readings oversimplify complex processes of identification.

Butler identifies the snake in Cather's My Ántonia as a phallic symbol and a site of castration anxiety around masculine identity.

Butler reveals that Clare's death in Larsen's Passing exposes the fragility of white racial purity and the violence enforcing racial boundaries.

Butler argues that Irene's apparent racial resistance to Clare in Passing conceals an unacknowledged homoerotic attraction between the two women.

Butler contends that Žižek's concept of foreclosure risks aligning with normative law and foreclosing the possibility of political rearticulation.

Butler insists that 'queer' must remain perpetually unowned and ambiguous to serve ever-expanding political purposes without creating new exclusions.

Butler begins by positioning the book at a difficult crossroads — between philosophy's historical avoidance of the body and feminism's tendency to idealize it — before revealing in the Introduction that sex is not a fact prior to language but is discursively assigned from birth. Chapter 1 exposes phallogocentrism as the mechanism by which the feminine becomes the site of its own erasure within classical philosophy. Chapter 2 delivers two pivotal conceptual moves: the revelation that Freud's erotogenization theory generates the symbolic phallus, and the introduction of the lesbian phallus as a transferable phantasm that severs phallic symbolism from male anatomy. Chapter 3 then uncovers the covert logic of heterosexuality, showing that it constitutes itself by casting non-heterosexual identities into abjection, before Chapter 4 exposes the reductiveness of feminist critiques that dismiss drag as simply misogynistic. The literary chapters reveal concealed desires — castration anxiety in Cather's snake symbol, homoerotic attraction masked as racial resistance in Larsen's Passing — and the final chapters expose the political stakes, arguing that Žižek's foreclosure forecloses resistance and that 'queer' must remain perpetually ambiguous to stay politically alive.
