Wang concludes the superpower competition will be won by whichever nation works better for the people living in it.

Dan Wang opens Breakneck by framing the contest between China and the United States as a clash between an engineering state that excels at construction and a lawyerly society that excels at obstruction. He supports this framework with infrastructure comparisons and evidence that China's top governing body was staffed entirely by engineers, then traces how Shenzhen's manufacturing ecosystem rose to global dominance at severe human cost. Wang argues that the one-child policy exemplifies the engineering state's ambition and brutality, enforced through mass sterilization campaigns that reshaped Chinese society for generations. The zero-COVID chapter shows the same dynamic at scale — an impressively controlled early phase collapsing into an eight-week lockdown of 25 million Shanghai residents, followed by protests and an abrupt, unplanned reversal. Wang concludes that the superpower competition ultimately turns not on factory output but on which system delivers a genuinely better life for its citizens, challenging both nations to reform.

Wang describes Sunset Park in Brooklyn as a thriving immigrant community and recommends his parents move there.

Wang opens by arguing that Americans and Chinese are surprisingly similar peoples whose governments have become antagonists, then builds his lawyerly society critique through statistics showing legal professionals dominate Congress while engineers are nearly absent. His Guizhou chapter layers secondary evidence — a county producing a seventh of the world's guitars, staggering cement output, a Tianjin library with fake book spines, and earthquake-killed children — to show both the scale and the waste of China's construction drive. In the technology chapter, Wang explains how Chinese manufacturers climbed from assembling components to dominating production by absorbing process knowledge, illustrated through the ritual rebuilding of Japan's Ise Grand Shrine. The one-child policy's reversal produces a failed pro-natalist campaign, and zero-COVID's enforcement is crystallized in the image of drones broadcasting commands to suppress the yearning for freedom. Wang ends in America, recommending his parents settle in a Brooklyn neighborhood that still embodies the immigrant energy and physical vitality he wants his country to recover.

Wang advocates for mutual curiosity between the United States and China as the best hedge against catastrophic conflict.

Wang's third analytical thread traces the pivotal choices and revelations that expose the engineering state's internal logic and its costs. In the technology chapter, he reveals how offshoring destroyed American process knowledge while China deliberately absorbed it, and how allowing a single foreign competitor into the Chinese market forced domestic automakers to leap forward. The one-child chapter turns on Wang's central revelation that China's fertility was already falling before the policy was imposed, meaning decades of coercive enforcement were built on a flawed premise. The zero-COVID chapter tracks Wang's personal emotional arc — meeting his future wife during calm times, watching Xi consolidate power, then catching COVID himself after the policy collapsed with no preparation. The book closes with Wang's family story serving as a pivot between systems: his parents' difficult immigration to Canada illustrates what is lost under authoritarianism, and his documentation of American broadband funding connecting zero homes crystallizes what is lost under proceduralism, before Wang calls for mutual curiosity as the only hedge against catastrophe.
