Caitlin appears only fleetingly in the present-day storyline, but each glimpse—flowers left in her locker, a cold run-in at school, a sighting with her new boyfriend—reveals how much Nick has lost. Leo emerges as a dark mirror of Nick's worst tendencies, first helping Nick evade a police officer and later showing off a loaded gun, before Nick watches him physically attack his own girlfriend. The pool closes with the hopeful reconciliation between Nick and Tom, offering a sense of earned restoration after months of silence.

His English teacher Miss Higgins enters his life as an unlikely ally, recognizing both his talent and his pain, while Mario uses a deliberate classroom confrontation to prove to Nick that he can choose not to respond with violence. The realization that Leo's possessiveness ended in a murder-suicide forces Nick to accept how close he came to the same destructive path. In the novel's final sessions, Mario's own confession of past violence and Nick's last phone call to Caitlin mark the moment Nick finally begins to let go of the person he was.
