His deepening entanglement with a pornography ring, a world-peace scheme involving the homosexual community, and a disastrous night at a bar converge in a humiliating public spectacle that lands him in hospital. His only escape from the city he swore never to leave comes in the unlikely form of his ex-girlfriend Myrna Minkoff.

Early humiliations—Mancuso's dressing-down by his sergeant, Ignatius's careless redecorating of the Levy Pants office—plant seeds that flower into catastrophe much later. The discovery of the Abelman lawsuit, George's scheme to exploit Ignatius's cart, and Jones's careful manipulation of the Night of Joy all converge on a single disastrous evening. The resolution hinges on a web of deceptions: Ignatius lying about his whereabouts, a confused Trixie accepting a false confession, and Mr. Levy privately recognizing the truth while choosing to stay silent. When Ignatius finally grasps what his mother has arranged, the last escape route available to him arrives, improbably, at his own front door.
