These events include early humiliations at the hands of Bibiji, the disastrous tea party staged to impress the household's British boss, and the physical dangers of factory labour in Daulatpur, where Munoo is hurt and falls ill. In Bombay, the pool follows his bewildering first hours in the city — food stolen by crows, nights on the scorching pavement, and a coworker's injury that goes entirely untreated. The pool closes in Simla, where a brief intimate moment with Mrs. Mainwaring and his eventual quarantine with tuberculosis mark the quiet final chapter of his life. Together, these secondary moments expose the grinding, day-by-day reality of the coolie existence that the novel's headline events can only suggest.

It begins with Sheila's brief, equalising friendship through the monkey dance in Sham Nagar and moves through the revelation of Ganpat's betrayal in Daulatpur, where Munoo first witnesses corruption destroying a good man's life. In Bombay, Munoo's naive dreams shatter the moment he sees the squalid company hut, while his growing friendship with Ratan offers him a fleeting model of dignity and resistance. The monsoon storm, the unsettling brothel visit, and Hari's wife whispering 'We belong to suffering' peel away the last of his childhood optimism layer by layer. The pool closes with the union's failure to act, Munoo's lonely reckoning with the hardness of life amid the riot's wreckage, and his terrified self-questioning the first night he coughs up blood in Simla.

The discoveries and emotional shifts that strip away Munoo's innocence one by one.
