Nine-year-old Danny lives with his father William in a Romani caravan beside a small filling station in the English countryside.

Danny wakes one night to find his father's bunk empty and William nowhere on their property.

William returns home and confesses his secret to Danny: he loves to poach pheasants from nearby Hazell's Wood.

William sets off to poach at Hazell's Wood again, promising Danny he will return home by 10:30pm.

Danny wakes at 2am to find William still missing and decides to drive a customer's car through the dark to find him.

Danny searches Hazell's Wood and finds William trapped in a 12-foot pit with a badly broken ankle.

Danny retrieves a towrope from the car, helps William climb out of the pit, and drives them both home.

Doc Spencer arrives at the workshop, examines William's broken ankle, and calls an ambulance to take him to hospital.

After returning from hospital, William tells Danny he wants to poach every last pheasant before Mr. Hazell's annual shooting party.

Danny suggests lacing pheasant-favorite raisins with William's sleeping powder capsules, and they name the plan Sleeping Beauty.

William and Danny sneak into Hazell's Wood at dusk and scatter the laced raisins among hundreds of feeding pheasants.

Standing in the dark woods, William and Danny count pheasants as they rain down from the trees — 120 birds total.

The sleeping pheasants wake up and erupt from Mrs. Clipstone's baby carriage right in front of William's filling station.

Mr. Hazell storms over demanding his pheasants back, but Sergeant Samways helps the community bamboozle and publicly humiliate him.

Danny and William walk hand-in-hand into the village, already making plans for their next adventure: trout tickling.

Danny lives with his widowed father William in a humble Romani caravan beside a small filling station, sharing a blissfully happy life. One night Danny wakes to find William missing, and William returns to confess his secret love of poaching pheasants from the estate of obnoxious landowner Victor Hazell. When William is trapped in a keeper's pit and fails to come home, nine-year-old Danny bravely drives a customer's car through the dark to rescue him. After William recovers, Danny devises a plan to lace pheasant-favorite raisins with sleeping powder and scatter them in Hazell's Wood before the annual shooting party, dubbing it Sleeping Beauty. The plan succeeds spectacularly, with 120 pheasants raining from the trees, but the birds wake up and escape during transport, landing on William's filling station instead. Mr. Hazell arrives in a fury but is outwitted by the law, outmaneuvered by Sergeant Samways, and driven away humiliated as Danny and William celebrate their victory.

William entertains Danny each night with elaborate multi-night bedtime stories, including a tale he calls the Big Friendly Giant.

William keeps Danny home from school until the age of seven so Danny can fully develop his mechanical skills.

William secretly builds Danny a complete soapbox car with bicycle wheels, brakes, and a steering wheel as an eighth birthday surprise.

William describes the poaching methods his father invented, including the Horsehair Stopper and the Sticky Hat.

William tells Danny about Victor Hazell, the wealthy snob who owns the surrounding land and has long tried to drive them away.

William and Danny soak a large batch of raisins overnight in preparation for the planned poach at Hazell's Wood.

Driving Baby Austin in the dark, Danny spots oncoming headlights and ducks the car through a gap in a hedge to hide from a police patrol.

Doc Spencer recounts the gleeful revenge he took on Mr. Hazell — giving him a painful injection using a deliberately blunt needle.

Doc Spencer's wife sends a magnificent cold meat pie to Danny and William after William's return from the hospital.

Mr. Hazell drives past the filling station each day wearing a smug sneer, leaving William brooding with thoughts of revenge.

William and Danny create a precise timetable for Sleeping Beauty — soaking raisins on Thursday, preparing and poaching on Friday.

Captain Lancaster canes Danny and his friend Sidney hard across their open palms for passing answers to each other in class.

William sees the welts across Danny's palm, turns white with rage, and reaches for his jacket to go confront the teacher.

William and Danny spend Friday morning carefully slicing open, filling, and sewing shut more than two hundred raisins with sleeping powder.

The drowsy pheasants scramble over Mr. Hazell's shiny Rolls-Royce, scratching the paintwork and leaving droppings all across it.

Before the great poaching plot unfolds, Danny's childhood is shaped by William's remarkable gifts as a storyteller, craftsman, and teacher, from elaborate multi-night bedtime tales to a handmade soapbox car built as a birthday surprise. William schools Danny in the art of poaching, explaining his father's ingenious methods and introducing the villain Victor Hazell, whose smug daily drive-bys stoke William's growing hunger for revenge. When the plan is set in motion, Danny's nerve is tested on his nighttime drive when he nearly runs into a police patrol, while Doc Spencer's gleeful revenge story about a deliberately blunt injection needle adds to the community's shared contempt for Hazell. The plan takes shape through careful preparation — soaking raisins, building a timetable, and spending an entire Friday morning filling each raisin with powder — though a painful school caning and William's furious reaction threaten to derail the day. The caper's climax arrives when the drowsy pheasants, freed from their disguised transport, stumble directly over Mr. Hazell's prized Rolls-Royce, completing his humiliation in front of a watching crowd.

The world of Danny and William — from childhood joys to the details of the great caper.

William admits he had vowed to stop poaching until Danny was old enough to be left alone at night, but broke that vow.

William confesses that poaching is not about necessity — it is a thrilling sport he has never been able to give up.

Swept up in William's excitement, Danny forgives his father and asks to come along on a future poaching trip.

Calculating that running will take too long, Danny makes the bold decision to drive to Hazell's Wood alone at night.

Danny finds William in the pit, and William's first words — calm, loving, and grateful — reveal no trace of panic or blame.

Danny is astonished to discover that Doc Spencer, a respected village doctor, enthusiastically endorses and shares William's passion for poaching.

Just as William is about to begin a bedtime story, Danny suddenly suggests using the sleeping capsule powder to drug the raisins.

Danny talks his furious father down by pointing out that William himself was almost certainly caned at school and survived without his father's intervention.

While sewing raisins together, William opens up about Danny's mother and reveals how deeply her death still quietly grieves him.

William explains to Danny that pheasants legally belong to whoever's land they settle on, regardless of who originally raised them.

Standing in dark silence in Hazell's Wood, William suddenly fears that sleeping pheasants roosting in trees may simply not fall down.

Danny realizes with surprise that nearly everyone in the village, including Sergeant Samways the policeman, already knows about and supports William's poaching.

To Danny's astonishment, Charlie Kinch's taxi is already waiting on the trail, revealing that William had arranged community help in advance.

Doc Spencer leads everyone to the workshop, where six pheasants that overdosed on sleeping powder still lie fast asleep on the bench.

Danny and William stand quietly together outside the empty filling station and agree their adventure was wonderful despite losing nearly all the birds.

Beneath the adventure plot lies a series of quiet revelations that reveal the true depth of Danny and William's relationship. William's guilty admission that he broke a vow made after his wife's death — and his honest confession that poaching is simply a sport he loves — force Danny to see his father as a flawed but deeply honest man, and Danny's quick forgiveness deepens their bond further. Danny's courage is tested when he chooses to drive alone through the dark, and his love is confirmed by the way he calmly rescues his father, who greets him with gratitude rather than distress. The sleeping powder plan is born in a flash of Danny's ingenuity at bedtime, and small moments of emotional weight — William grieving quietly over Danny's mother while sewing raisins, Danny maturely talking his father out of violence — show the wisdom each draws from the other. The execution of the plan brings its own turning point when William doubts in the dark that the pills will even work, before the pheasants finally rain down and Danny discovers the full, surprising extent of the village's involvement. A quiet moment of reflection outside the empty filling station leaves both father and son entirely content with the adventure they created together.
