Herr meets a 4th Division Lurp on his third tour who swallows handfuls of uppers and downers before each night patrol.

Herr rides a helicopter crowded with Marine corpses and must reach over to cover a dead man's exposed face.

The Tet Offensive begins and Saigon is placed under curfew as coordinated enemy attacks strike across the country.

Flynn and Dana Stone ride their motorcycles into Cambodia and are never seen or heard from again.

Back in New York, Herr is haunted by dreams of dead Marines so vivid he cannot separate them from reality.

Michael Herr arrives in Saigon as a war correspondent and is immediately dropped into the disorienting reality of combat. He witnesses death up close, from helicopter rides filled with corpses to the chaos of the Tet Offensive and brutal street fighting in Hue. At Khe Sanh, Herr befriends two young Marines, Day Tripper and Mayhew, giving readers their first named characters to care about. The psychological toll of sustained combat becomes vivid when a Marine who has completed his tour cannot force himself onto his own evacuation helicopter. At China Beach, Herr learns that Mayhew has been killed by an RPG round, making the book's abstract body count suddenly personal. The narrative closes with Herr back in New York, unable to leave Vietnam behind, haunted by dreams that feel more real than waking life.

The headline story of Herr's war from arrival to homecoming.

An information officer enthusiastically briefs journalists about destroying the Ho Bo Woods despite steadily rising American casualties afterward.

The 4th Division Lurp survives an ambush by hiding beneath the bodies of his fellow soldiers while the Viet Cong search the dead.

Flynn, Page, and Herr fail to salute a commanding officer who then wants to stage a combat operation for press coverage.

A helicopter gunner tosses Herr a helmet reading 'TIME IS ON MY SIDE'; Herr discovers where it came from and quietly ditches it.

Tim Page steps near a mine and a two-inch piece of shrapnel lodges deep in his brain.

Page defies his doctors' prognosis of permanent paralysis and throws a party celebrating his twenty-fifth birthday with friends.

Behind the front-line combat, Dispatches is built from vivid secondary moments that expose the gap between official narrative and ground-level reality. Information officers spin defeats as victories, while soldiers collect grim war trophies and Dana Stone counsels new correspondents with brutal practicality. At Khe Sanh, small acts of humanity — Mayhew shielding Herr's body, Orrin's dark determination to survive — give daily existence its texture. Herr's attempts to extract honest answers from military commanders produce evasion and non-answers at every turn. Among the correspondents, camaraderie is tested when friends are killed in a jeep ambush and Tim Page is nearly destroyed by shrapnel. Even after the war, its characters keep moving — some surpassing every medical expectation, and others staging one last party before the losses begin to pile up.

The supporting cast and hidden moments that reveal the war's texture.

A captain returns from a five-mile sweep and files a report recording a likely civilian kill as 'one VC killed.'

Herr brings heat tablets and alcohol to Khe Sanh and the Marines ensure he always has gear and a stretcher to sleep on.

The African American staff sergeant who snubbed Herr after King's assassination later seeks him out and shares a bottle of scotch.

On an early helicopter ride, Herr watches helplessly as a young soldier across from him is shot through the gut.

A sergeant threatens to shoot down a helicopter that refuses to evacuate his wounded medic and is later reprimanded by his commander.

Herr sees a photograph of a North Vietnamese soldier sitting peacefully along the Danang River where the press center once stood.

Dispatches is built on moments of revelation — personal, moral, and political — that shift Herr's understanding of what he is doing in Vietnam and why. Early scenes expose his childhood shame at finding war compelling, and the first time he screams in genuine terror, he knows he is no longer a passive observer. The gap between military propaganda and frontline reality is made plain in soldiers' contempt for optimistic predictions and in a captain who files a dead civilian as a confirmed enemy kill. As Herr crosses from witness to participant — picking up weapons and sleeping in bunkers — the war reshapes him in ways that can't be undone. Deaths and disappearances accumulate: a sergeant's grief reconciled over scotch, a wounded medic rescued through a threat, friends who ride into Cambodia and never return. Herr's final image of a North Vietnamese soldier sitting peacefully where the press center once stood encapsulates everything the war cost and changed.
