Juan keeps Ana isolated in their apartment, and his controlling behavior escalates into physical violence that leaves Ana searching for a way out. When Ana attempts to flee and discovers she is pregnant, she understands she must find another path to freedom. The darker corners of Ana and Juan's relationship are exposed — his violent jealousy toward César, his guilty gifts, and his ongoing affair with Caridad — alongside moments of unexpected community, such as the Ruiz family's gathering in Tarrytown. Marisela's betrayal teaches Ana that even female friendships can be fragile in the cutthroat world of immigrant survival, while César's arrest and recovery mark the fragility of their partnership. The pool captures the intimate turning points of Ana and César's romance alongside the political and emotional turbulence surrounding it, from the civil rights protests in her neighborhood to the Ruiz brothers debating race on television. The arrival of Mamá, who criticizes Ana before ultimately weeping for her sacrifices at the hospital, represents the novel's most profound emotional reconciliation and marks Ana's full emergence into her own womanhood.
